About this song

"Summon the Heroes" was written by John Williams for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. This version of the song is arranged by Paul Lavender with percussion by Barry Reese.

Instrumentation requirements

"Summon the Heroes" is one of the most challenging pieces in the band's library, as it is very faithful to the original arrangement. Due to its recognizability and the fact that it is a more symphonic piece, it should be rehearsed thoroughly before a performance. A strong trumpet soloist is listed in the score, but the firsts can run the part as a soli if needed. A strong trumpet section in general is recommended since the song is primarily a fanfare. In addition, there are parts for xylophone, sleigh bells, and an optional timpani part that is not included in the score (and therefore probably doesn't exist in the library). These extra percussion parts show that the arrangement was intended for a field routine.

Roadmap

There are no repeats or codas in this song. The band plays straight through as written.

History

This song was purchased by Charlie Scaringello during his conductorship in the 2003-2004 season. It was given the number 434 at the time, but since no original copies exist save for a score, it was forgetten about soon afterward and 434 was given to "Fever" from Dr. Mario instead in 2006. Around the same time, the score to Summon the Heroes was rediscovered, and it currently exists without a number and only as a score.
