Talk:Homecoming and Reunion Weekend
2012-07-21T23:26:53Z

Bickfa:

Does anyone have old records for Homecoming games? I have a hard time believing RPI didn't celebrate Homecoming before 2008. The RPI athletics website, almanac, and augenblick.org are all no help. lugnut92 16:12, July 21, 2012 (CDT)
:I can vouch for there being no Homecoming games during the period 2003-2007. I do remember that Reunion used to be in late May/early June, so that could explain part of the lack of Homecoming. All the same, I agree that it does seem likely that there were Homecomings at some point in the past. Bickfa 16:26, July 21, 2012 (PDT)

RPI's sports teams are known as the Engineers. The teams for men's and women's hockey, track and field, indoor track, cross country, football and tennis have always been known as the Engineers, while the rest of the varsity sports teams were known as the Red Hawks until 9/10/09 when the institute announced it would change all team names to the Engineers, reverting to the method used years ago by the school. The pep band will most commonly play at home men's and women's hockey games, as well as home football games. Every home men's hockey and football game is broadcasted by WRPI 91.5 FM, RPI's college radio station.
Big Games
There are a number of hockey games over the course of the season that carry special significance.

Big Red Freakout!
Recent Opponents and Results
2010-2011: Yale W 5-2

2009-2010: Princeton L 0-7

2006-2007: St. Lawrence T 3-3

For information on Freakout, see this page.

Black Friday
Black Friday started during the 2003-2004 season to honor the passing of women's hockey coach Bill Cahill and equipment manager Tom Cavosie. This game now takes place on the first home ECAC Hockey game of the season. Free admission is given to all students wearing black, and members of the band are given black t-shirts which they wear over their regular rugby shirts. The team also wears special black jerseys for the game which are raffled off for charity afterwards. In 2010, Black Friday was replaced with Black Saturday. RPI is 7-1-1 all-time in Black Friday games.

Recent Opponents and Results
2011-2012: Yale L 0-2

For a complete list of Black Friday results, see this page.

White-Out
White-Out started during the 2004-2005 season under the name "White-Out Wednesday" as a gimmick to draw a crowd for a rare mid-week game. The White-Out game has since become an annual event whose scheduling remains somewhat mysterious to the band. RPI is 2-4 all-time in White-Out games.

Recent Opponents and Results
2010-2011: Cornell L 2-3 (OT)

2009-2010: Cornell L 1-2

Senior Night
Senior Night is the last home game of the regular season. RPI is 34-26-1 in Senior Night games since 1950.

Recent Opponents and Results
Football
That other sport.

Big Games
Like for hockey, there are a few football games over the course of the season that carry special significance.

Dutchman's Shoes Trophy Game
Every year, the Engineers play Union for possession of the Dutchman's Shoes Trophy. Dating back to 1886, it is the oldest college football rivalry in New York State. Since 1950 (when the trophy was introduced), Union leads the series 46-16. At the current date, the Shoes reside at Union.

Transit Trophy Game
Every year, the Engineers play Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) for possession of the Transit Trophy. Since 1980 (when the trophy was introduced), RPI leads the series 21-10-1. At the current date, the Transit Trophy resides at WPI.

Shot Glass Trophy Game
From 1944 to 2005, the Engineers played the Coast Guard Academy for possession of the Shot Glass Trophy. Coast Guard leads the series 33-19-2, though they've only won 7 times since 1985. The series between the two schools ended following Coast Guard's departure from the Liberty League following the 2005 season. Since RPI won the most recent game of the series, the Shot Glass Trophy resides at RPI in the '87 gym.

AKA The Chicken, this was the mascot of most of the non-Hockey, non-Football sports teams at RPI prior to 2009-2010 season. The Red Hawk used to make appearances at football games, but stopped doing so several years before being officially being dropped as a mascot for RPI's other sports.

When it did make appearances at games it was frequently poked fun at by members of the band with chants of "I feel like chicken tonight" (a reference to an old commercial for this product).
Spring

Bickfa: specifying which Tim did in the spring

For no apparent reason, there was a large, broken spring in West Hall 326. It was most likely part of a vehicle's suspension system.

The spring, like the inanimate carbon rod, was used as a candidate during conductor and manager elections. When Tim Tesluk ran for conductor, he ran unopposed, so the spring was interviewed instead. When asked to give its best "Trumpets, 1 2!", someone dropped the spring, hitting the with the floor with the exact beat patten a conductor would use. In order to keep the spring from amassing too much power, Tim decided to remove its name from the ballot permanently.
The Transit Trophy is a trophy awarded to the winner of the annual college football game between the RPI Engineers and the WPI Engineers since 1980. After the 1979 contest it was decided by the athletic directors of both schools to create a trophy for this long-standing rivalry. A transit was chosen since both schools are engineering schools. Currently the Transit Trophy resides in Worcester, but RPI leads the series 21-9-1.
Recent Trips
While there have been no formal trips by the band to the University of Minnesota, several members (and alumni) attended the men's hockey teams's games in the 2007 IceBreaker Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in near by St. Paul, Minnesota, one of which was against the Golden Gophers.
*FSN was broadcasting the 10/13/07 game. Before two commercial breaks, they pointed the camera at the small group of RPI fans (namely RPI Pep band members). The second shot before another break featured Andrew Bickford conversing with someone who was not in view of the camera.
The larger of the band's two flags, The Big Flag is a copy of the official Rensselaer flag given to the band by former RPI President R. Byron Pipes. It is waved during hockey games during all playings of Hail, including the beginning and end of each period and after the team scores a goal.

For many years the flag was mounted between two roughly 8 foot long pieces of wood. Following the 2004-2005 season it was taken off of its mounting, cleaned, and put on a new 8 foot red hockey stick. The Big Flag is currently waved by male flute player whose name I've forgotten.
At current, the horn is not sounded at women's games, where some fans have taken to bringing portable air horns with them to make a similar noise when the team scores.

The notes of the air horn were determined by Will Schmarder to be Concert C, Eb, and G. Although there are three horns, only Concert C and Concert Eb are easily heard today.

This cheer is performed immediately after Hail when the Engineers score a goal during a hockey game.

The band and game spectators count off the team's total score while waving one arm towards the opposing goalie. For example, if the Engineers have just scored their third goal, the crowd and band would chant:

:"One, two, three, we want more! Sieve! Sieve! Sieve! Sieve! Sieve! Sieve! Siiiiiiieve!"

The word "sieve" is repeated seven times, and the last "sieve" is a little longer. There is then much applause, and high fives all around. In addition, anyone wearing a hard hat will tap it against anyone else wearing a hard hat's hard hat. It is also customary for the bass drum to be struck along with each word of the cheer with a small roll at the end.
041 - Hail, Dear Old Rensselaer
2011-03-06T19:39:09Z

Bickfa: linking of the rest of the goal celebration

About the song
Hail, Dear Old Rensselaer was written by Charles S. Root '34. The verision which the band plays was arranged by A. Olin Niles. This is our fight song. It is played at the beginning and end of each period and whenever the team scores.

Although Hail may officially be catalogued as number 41, the number is never used. The song is simply known as Hail.

Lyrics
Occasionally there is a call for non-playing band members to sing, or for the RPI community to sing along to Hail. Here are the lyrics, as written by Charles S. Root '34:

:Hail, dear old Rensselaer, the college of our heart

:For dear old Rensselaer, we all must do our part (FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!)

:True to old Rensselaer, we'll always strive to be

:Now, dear old Rensselaer, hail to thee

:Hear the tramp, tramp, tramp of marching feet

:Hear the rat-tat-tat of drums that beat

:Hear the voices ringing loud and sweet

:Hear that mighty shout of...

Note that prior to the admittance of women to RPI in 1942, the refrain's 2nd and 3rd lines were sung as:

:For dear old Rensselaer, each man must do his part
:True sons of Rensselaer, we'll always strive to be

"Alternate" lyrics intended to be sung in a lazy manner, are:
:Blah, blah blah Rensselaer, blah blah blah blah blah blah

:Blah, blah blah Rensselaer, blah blah blah blah blah blah (FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!)

:Blah, blah blah Rensselaer, blah blah blah blah blah blah

:Blah, blah blah Rensselaer, blaaaah, blaaaah, blaaaaaaaaah.

Roadmap
The conductor begins by screaming, "Trumpets... One! Two!"

The song is played as written, with the exception that the conductor has discretion to instruct the band to play the sixteen measure breakstrain and to Da Capo. This is very rarely done more than once, and then only for good reason. Jim Cronen once played the breakstrain twice as music to cover up a skirmish that erupted on the ice after the clock had hit zero and the game was over.

The short form of Hail, without the breakstrain, is used after goals in hockey or after scores in football. During hockey games, the vocal cheer We Want More then immediately follows Hail.

The long form of Hail, with the breakstrain, is used when the hockey team comes onto or leaves the ice at the beginning or end of a period of play. It is also used when the band plays at miscellaneous school functions.

The smaller of the band's two flags, this flag is homemade and roughly 1.5ft.x3ft with "RPI" on one side and a picture of Puckman on the other. This flag is run around the Houston Field House every time the Engineers score a goal.

Prior to the 2004-2005 season, the flag was passed from one member of the band to the next, along with a wet floor sign which served as it's holder. The person who possessed the flag was charged with bringing it to the game and with making sure that someone was lined up to run it. At the end of the 2003-2004 season, it was passed to Andrew Bickford who had recently been elected manager and was already busy waving the big flag during goal celebrations. As a result of these facts and a lack of storage space in his room, the flag came to take up residence in West Hall with the band's instruments.

During the 2006-2007 season, the flag was taken by a member of the crowd after one of the hockey games. It wasn't recovered until several weeks later when Steve Camillieri found it in an apartment in the RAHPs. In the interim period, another smaller flag was fashioned out of felt as a replacement.

Things which are traditionally done by members of the band at the Big Red Freakout!.

Rehearsal with the alumni
Many of the alumni who return for Freakout make an appearance at the rehearsal that morning to dust the cobwebs off of their instruments and get some of the songs back under their fingers.

Lasagna Dinner
The band holds a pre-Freakout lasagna dinner and face painting each year. Prior to 2005, the band and the alumni both attended the same lasagna dinner, but due to increasing numbers of returning alumni, the Alumni Association has held its own separate lasagna dinner every year since.

Frosh
At the Lasagna Dinner, it is traditional that one (or more) of the freshmen in the band get the word "Frosh" written on his/her/their face(s). For a list of past year's Frosh, see here.

Freakout Gift
A free gift is given away by the Athletic Department to every person who attends Freakout. For a list of all past Freakout gifts, see Past Freakouts. For a gallery of pictures of past Freakout gifts, see Gallery of Freakout Gifts

Freakout Strippers
During the second period break, the band plays The Stripper while one or more strippers (usually, but not always band members) (usually, but not always female) strip at the front of the stage. For a list of past year's strippers, see here.

Post-Game Ice Time
Following the game, the band traditionally rents the ice for a session of running around on the ice. This usually involves a ball or other similarly spherical object being kicked/thrown around on the ice.

After Party
Following the ice time and the unloading party, the members of the band and the alumni have a post-Freakout party, usually at a local alum's house.

After-After Party
There is frequently another party after the After Party winds down.
Freakout is probably best described as being analogous to Homecoming. Only instead of being in the Fall, it's in late January or early February, and instead of a football game, it's a men's hockey game. It is traditional for a large number of alumni to return for Freakout and for a gift to be given to every person in attendance by the Athletic Department. The larger of the band's two flags, The Big Flag is a copy of the official Rensselaer flag given to the band by former RPI President R. Byron Pipes. It is waved during hockey games during all playings of Hail.

For many years the flag was mounted between two roughly 8 foot long pieces of wood. Following the 2004-2005 season it was taken off of its mounting, cleaned, and put on a new 8 foot red hockey stick. The Big Flag is currently waved by male flute player whose name I've forgotten.

As of 1997, the band traditionally never traveled to Princeton due to rumors of bad blood between the Hobey Baker Rink staff and the band. Conductor Jim Cronen and about fifteen members of the band were attending a New Year's Eve party at the home of John Cloninger, and the multi-day party was extended to the following Saturday, January 3, 1998. Mike Brown and others borrowed instruments (including a bass drum and a tuba) from West Hall and schlepped them to New Jersey.

Through the Houston Field House box office staff, Jim was able to acquire tickets to the January 3 game for a group of fifteen. It was not mentioned to the Field House staff nor to the Hobey Baker Rink staff that the band would be making an appearance.

The small but instrumentally complete band descended on Baker Rink on the evening of Saturday, January 3, 1998. Despite arriving at the game unannounced, the band encountered little resistance with the Princeton team, staff, students, or fans. This is likely due to the fact that the trip occurred at a less-attended game during the Christmas break. RPI fans attending the game were impressed to see the small but devoted band.

Since 1998, the band has made several trips back to Princeton University.

When it joined the ECACHL for the 2005-2006 season, Quinnipiac's Men's and Women's teams initially played at the Northford Ice Pavilion in Northford, CT. This venue quickly became notorious for its poor ice conditions, limited seating, and extremely low ceiling. It was a community ice rink being used for Division I hockey. Quinnipiac's teams also played a few "home" games at Ingalls rink at Yale University and the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, CT.

Quinnipiac remedied this problem early in 2007 when they opened the TD Banknorth Sports Center, a combination basketball/hockey venue with better seating, sight lines, and team accommodations. The $52 million venue seats 3,286 for hockey, making it the 5th largest rink out of the 12 in the ECAC.

The Quinnipiac Pep Band was formed in approximately 2001 and is funded by the QU Athletic Department. Lack of funding and support by the school has kept the band from growing very large, and the band often faces severe heckling from rowdy students at games. When the RPI Pep Band last traveled to Quinnipiac, their band's leadership expressed interest in coming to a game at RPI, as the two bands got along well and had a good time.

The bands played together in 2007 for the 2006-2007 ECAC championships when the Bobcats took on the Clarkson Golden Knights. Quinnipiac fans commented on the quality of music coming from the band that night, as they had grown accustomed to not hearing them at the TD Banknorth Sports Center. Quinnipiac's administration had issued a decree along with the new building that PA music would be played during stoppages and after goals, leaving the band with little to no opportunity to play during a game. This issue will be worked on for the coming season, so that both Quinnipiac's and visiting bands will have the opportunity to play for games at the TDBNSC.
The St. Lawrence Saints have played in the ECAC since its formation in the 1961-1962 season. They are travel partners with Clarkson.

Where to Stay
In 2005, the band rented out a significant portion of a small resort named "The Stone Fence" in Ogdensburg/Morristown, including two nice town houses for the senior members. It also had a fine view of Canada across the river. These cabins proved to be very nice locations for Friday evening's obligatory road trip party. The resort was also incredibly inexpensive, as the middle of the winter is certainly not high season for a summer resort. The resort is a bit of a drive from Canton (about a half hour), but it is worth the trip.

What to Do
Unfortunately, there's not really much to do in and around Canton. During the band's trip to the North Country in 2005, they spent the bulk of their Saturday at the St. Lawrence Centre, a mall in Massena which has a public, indoor skating rink in addition to a small assortment of stores and a food court.
Black Friday
2011-03-02T04:33:10Z

Bickfa: Black Friday is officially traditional

Black Friday started during the 2003-2004 season to honor the passing of women's hockey coach Bill Cahill and equipment manager Tom Cavosie. This game now takes place on the first home ECAC Hockey game of the season. Free admission is given to all students wearing black, and members of the band are given black t-shirts which they wear over their regular rugby shirts. The team also wears special black jerseys for the game which are raffled off for charity afterwards. In 2010, Black Friday was replaced with Black Saturday due to the home-and-home weekend with Union being the first ECAC weekend involving a home game. RPI is 7-0-1 all-time in Black Friday games.
Black Friday T-shirts
Every year for Black Friday the band is given a set of Black Friday t-shirts by the Athletic Department. It has been tradition since the first Black Friday to wear the t-shirts over the band's usual rugby shirts to match the crowd which is also encouraged to wear black for the game.
Big Red Freakout!

Obligatory reference to The Matrix
Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Freakout is. You must experience it for yourself.

Actually Useful Information
Freakout is probably best described as being analogous to Homecoming. Only instead of being in the Fall, it's in late January or early February, and instead of a football game, it's a men's hockey game. It is traditional for a large number of alumni to return for Freakout and for a gift to be given to every person in attendance by the Athletic Department. For a further list of traditions associated with Freakout, see Freakout Traditions.
