The MVP Arena (formerly known as the Times Union Center, Pepsi Arena, and before then as the Knickerbocker Arena) in Albany, NY is a former home of the ECAC Hockey men's hockey tournament. The arena seats 14,236 for hockey, but rarely gets more than 5,000. The arena hosted the tournament annually from 2003 to 2010 after moving from Lake Placid, NY, with the tournament currently being held in Atlantic City, NJ.

From 2006 to 2008 the MVP Arena also hosted the in-season Governor's Cup tournament featuring RPI, Union, and two other rotating teams who were usually somewhat local to Albany. This tournament was later dropped due to poor fan attendance.

The Mayor's Cup game was introduced in 2013. The Mayor's Cup features Union and RPI. The games typically have a large turnout and end with the Mayor of Albany presenting the winning team with the Mayor's Cup trophy.

In 2026, MVP Arena was one of the regional hosts of the NCAA tournament. A small group of members went to see Michigan beat Bently 5-1, and Minnesota Duluth beat Penn State 3-1.

The Toll Booth Song is sung by the members of the band on all road trips whenever the bus passes through a toll booth. A line is added to the song during the first road trip of the Spring semester each year to commemorate that year's conductor. The song's origins are unknown by the current members of the band, though it would seem likely that it started sometime in the early 1990's as the list of conductors in the song is roughly that long.

Lyrics
Ahhhhhh (hold this when the toll booth first comes into sight, then start singing once the bus pulls out)<br>

Day trip to Union College in the first game of the Blackout Weekend. This was the first game at Union's new hockey area "M&T Bank Center". 5-2 Victory for the Engineers with two goals by Tyler Wallace and Ethan Bono and a fifth by Thomas Klassek! Union's band remained small enough that the RPI Pep Band played the Anthems despite being the away band. The bands did form a super band and played "Bad Romance" together.

November 15th, 2025: Dutchman Shoes Trophey @ Union

The Engineers lost the Shoes to Union in a 21-28 defeat.

November 21st, 2025: Men's Hockey @ Colgate University

The first leg of the weekend trip was a 2-1 defeat for the Engineers in Hamilton. The experience was also marred by some fairly drunk Colgate supporters who verbally harassed the band, one of whom tried to come into our area of the stands, and who threw some of their beer onto the band at the end of the game. The bands played in a super band and Colgate's Band was also bothered by their own fans. The band was escorted by security out of the arena at the end of the game.

November 22nd, 2025: Men's Hockey @ Cornell University

The second leg of the fall trip ended in a 6-1 loss for the Engineers. The Cornell fans packed their arena and were gracious hosts for the band. The Cornell band had been expected to be absent but arrived during second period. While there was no super band some Cornell band members did briefly join the RPI band.

January 24th, 2026: Mayors Cup @ MVP Arena

Union played the "host" as the Engineers failed to win either game in two frustrating losses. The Women lost 3-4 and the Men lost 4-5 in overtime. The Engineers gave up two goals after Union pulled their goalie to equalize and won it in extra time, much to the despair of the band.

February 9th, 2026: Women's Hockey @ Colgate University

The Band took a day trip back to Hamilton to watch the Women's team take on Colgate on their senior night. The band brought 35 Peppers into the Class of 1965 arena and Colgate's band declined a super band, despite being at the game. The women brought the game to overtime with an incredible performance by Reese Keating who kept out 43 of Colgate's 45 shots, but failed to win on the night with a final score of 2-1. The Band unfortunately did not clap for the team after the game as temperatures were dropping well into the negatives. Colgate fans were much more welcoming this time around. The band was only heckled by a handful of sober elementary schoolers.

February 27th, 2026: Men's Hockey @ Brown University

February 28th, 2026: Men's Hockey @ Yale University
Regular Season
Football
Men's Hockey
After Dave Smith was fired last season, Eric Lang joined the men's team as their new head coach, bringing effectively an entirely new hockey team with him (around 8 returning members remained on the team in the transition).
*11-22-1 (8-13-1 ECAC)
**Blackout vs. Union: L 0-3
**Freakout vs. Harvard: W 3-1

Women's Hockey
Captain Nina Christoff departed the team in late January to compete in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan representing Germany. She was accompanied to Milan by her boyfriend Henry Rogers.
*7-28-0 (4-18-0 ECAC)
**Mayor's Cup vs. Union: L 3-4

Playoffs
Men's Hockey
A contingent of about 20 Peppers + 1 guest ended their spring breaks early and made the grave mistake of visiting Potsdam, NY (basically Canada). There they witnessed a 1-2 defeat of the Engineers and went home sad after a very long trip.

Women's Hockey
L, 2-4 at Colgate University

Other
*A new cheer sheet was arranged. Mason Wong was the primary lead, Jason Caldwell crafted many of the percussion parts, Aidan Reed and Arthur Kardos contributed one cheer each.

__NOTOC__

Clarkson University is the second furthest ECAC venue from RPI (only St. Lawrence is further, and only by a few miles). Located in Potsdam, NY, it is only about 20 miles from the St. Lawrence River, which marks the border between the state of New York and the Canadian providence of Ontario.

Cheel Arena is arguably the nicest rink in the ECAC. As opposed to the Houston Field House, which lies far from the core of RPI's campus, Cheel Arena is actually part of Clarkson's student union. It is well lit, has ample seating (though still only 3/5 as much as the Houston Field House), and is generally a very nice arena. Do not take these compliments to suggest that the trip to Clarkson is a pleasant one, however.

Cheel Arena is the least inviting of any of the venues we travel to. Clarkson fans are loud and obnoxious, even more so than Union's. During recent trips several band members were verbally threatened by fans or had trash thrown at them, and there have been attempts at setting the flag on fire. It is somewhat surprising that a fight hasn't broken out in recent memory, though there have been several close calls.

Clarkson's band is no better than their fans. They are equally loud and obnoxious, and show no respect for visiting bands. They will play over us, taunt us, and generally do anything they can to make us feel unwelcome. They also have a rather annoying habit of attempting to show up visiting bands (or home bands, when they travel). They will scream something to the effect of "Hey <other team>'s band. This is how a real pep band is supposed to sound!" Apparently, however, it is their band's opinion that pep bands are supposed to sound horrifically out of tune. This was especially apparent when they did this during RPI's trip in 2005, when their band surrounded ours and started playing Louie, Louie. After a few bars we joined in, and generally outplayed Clarkson's band in both volume and quality, even though the band was outnumbered nearly 2 to 1.

In addition to being a very unpleasant place to go to, getting to and from Potsdam is a problem in and of itself. No major highways go anywhere near Potsdam, lengthening an already long trip. This was compounded in 2005, when the game took place during a blizzard - with no accommodations arranged for the night after the Saturday game, the band had no choice but to leave Potsdam and travel back to Troy. The band's bus followed the team's bus slowly down the nearly impassible roads, and did not arrive back in Troy until after 4:00 AM.

... (and Clarkson still sucks)

Where to stay
In 2005, the band rented out a significant portion of a small resort named "The Stone Fence" in Ogdensburg/Morristown, including two nice town houses for the senior members. It also had a fine view of Canada across the river. These cabins proved to be very nice locations for Friday night's obligatory road trip party. The resort was also very inexpensive, as the middle of the winter is not exactly high season for a summer resort. The resort is a bit of a drive from Potsdam (nearly an hour), but it is worth the trip.

What to do
Unfortunately, there's not really much to do around Potsdam. During the band's trip to the North Country in 2005 they spent the bulk of their Saturday at the St. Lawrence Centre, a mall in Massena which has a public indoor skating rink in addition to a food court and a small assortment of stores.
Though it's located a short distance away from downtown Providence, the rooms were nice and a free continental breakfast was provided.

Freakout 2025 was a back and forth affair between the Engineers and the Bulldogs. Yale took an early lead, but one minute later RPI tied it up with 30 seconds left in the first. The second period started off calm with Yale scoring once again halfway through the period, but RPI soon tied it back up four minutes later. With less than 5 seconds on the clock in the second, Felix Caron scored sending the Field House into a frenzy to put RPI into the lead for the first time all game. In the third period RPI scored 2 empty net goals with goalie Noah Giesbrecht getting the assist on the second. With a final score of 5-2, the Engineers put on an outstanding performance, perhaps the best of the whole season.
