Blackout

Blackout, formerly called Black Friday, started during the [[2003-2004]] season to honor the passing of women's hockey coach Bill Cahill and equipment manager Tom Cavosie. This game now takes place on the first home [[ECAC Hockey]] game of the season. Free admission is given to all students wearing black, and members of the band are given [[Black Friday T-shirts|black t-shirts]] which they wear over their regular [[Rugby Shirts|rugby shirts]]. The team also wears special black jerseys for the game which are raffled off for charity afterwards. In [[2010-2011|2010]], Black Friday was replaced with Black Saturday due to the home-and-home weekend with [[Union College|Union]] being the first [[ECAC Hockey|ECAC]] weekend involving a home game. With the start of the [[2018-2019|2018-19]] season, this event was named Blackout. It is often considered the second biggest game of the year, behind [[Freakout]].

Being the first home men's game, Blackout tends to be against [[Union College]], with each year swapping between being held on Friday or Saturday.

Any students wearing black is granted free admission to the game, so the band tends to follow suit with the custom. The [[Manager|managers]] however wear special [[Blackout Rugbies|Blackout rugbies]] during the game. These are older rugbies with a certain message directed to [[Union College|Union]] ironed onto the front side.

===Blackout T-shirts===
Every year for Blackout, the band is given a set of Blackout t-shirts by the Athletic Department. It has been tradition since the [[2003-2004|first Black Friday]] to wear the t-shirts over the band's usual [[Rugby Shirts|rugby shirts]] to match the crowd which is also encouraged to wear black for the game. Starting in the 2014-2015 season, the band stopped receiving T-Shirts. As of the 2018-19 season, the band again gets Blackout t-shirts once again.

====January 30-31, 2015: Women's Hockey @ Colgate & Cornell====
Overnight trip to [[Colgate University|Colgate]] (Lost 2-4) and [[Cornell University|Cornell]] (Lost 1-7). During this trip, the entire band ate at a Friendly's, essentially taking over the small restaurant. John Bergman ordered ice cream off the kid's menu, and failed to complete a maze on the menu with his crayons. This event was the inspiration for his line in the [[Toll Booth Song]].

====February 6-7, 2015: Men's Hockey @ Saint Lawrence & Clarkson====
Overnight trip to [[St. Lawrence University|SLU]] (Lost 1-3) and [[Clarkson University|Clarkson]] (Lost 2-5). At SLU on Feb. 6th, the RPI pep band was harassed by a SLU student with a large bass drum. Sassy responses by Emily Bujnowski lead to her being dubbed the 'RPI Bitch' via yik yak. The Clarkson Pep band joined the RPI pep band for lunch at a Chinese Buffet. The Clarskon band also chanted 'Damn that's hot' upon the playing of Mexican Cheer by Devin Glenn. During the first period, Luke Curadi and Nic Pierog broke through a pannel of glass, just in front of Mrs. Curadi.

===March 7th, 2015: Men's Hockey @ Clarkson===
Daytrip to [[Clarkson University|Clarkson]] (Lost 0-5). During the second intermission, the RPI Pep Band and the Clarkson Pep Band joined forces to 'super band'. Gospel John and Crazy Train were played. The announcer also mentioned the RPI Pep Band after playing.

Natural Noise (NRB event)

[[Natural Noise (band slogan)|100% Natural Noise]] is the NRB program that the band has run since [[2006-2007|2006]]. It usually consists of a two hour rehearsal/introduction to the band, followed by some kind of additional get-together afterwards.

==History==
Before the [[2006-2007]] school year, the Office of the First Year Experience (FYE) contacted the band about a new NRB program they were starting called "variable programming blocks," where incoming freshmen would have the option to walk in on any number of two hour events hosted by clubs on campus during NRB. The then-current officers jumped at the opportunity and decided to use the time as a toned down version of the typical first rehearsal, as they had all been pretty intimidated by their first rehearsal experiences. Since nobody knew what to expect little planning went into the first program, and there is yet to emerge more than a general idea of what this event should be. The progression of this event has been as follows:
*[[2006-2007|2006]]: About 30-35 people that showed up, exceeding expectations. Everyone introduced themselves, and then the band played a handful of songs. After the rehearsal there was pizza and a showing of "Blast!" on the projector screen in West Hall 326, but only upperclassmen stuck around for the movie.
*[[2007-2008|2007]]: There was a much larger turnout for this event than the previous year (around 50), causing introductions to be a lengthy procedure (it took about 45 minutes from the beginning of the program until the band started playing). About 10 people that were present went bowling at Uncle Sam Lanes later that night.
*[[2008-2009|2008]]: The event was held with short introductions and a much bigger emphasis on playing music. Around 40-45 people attended this event, and afterward about 15 of those people drove to Prospect Park for a barbecue.

The managers did a brief slide show to show what was involved with pep band and then the band played a handful of songs after. Pep Band Manfesto

The Pep Band Manifesto was created by [[AJ Macey]] at the 2005 [[2005-2006#Playoffs#Football|ECAC Northwest Championship Game]] against [[St. John Fisher College|St. John Fisher]]. It was written on a piece of wood which was removed from the border of a large Rensselaer banner which was found in one of the closets in [[West Hall]].

After returning to Troy, it was put back into the closet from whence it came. The Manifesto was unearthed nearly 20 years later in the Pep Closet in [[J-Building]]. On the front of the stick, it reads "The Official Pep Band Manifesto". On the back, it reads:

''"This is the official Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Stick. It is used to beat people that are Douches, Demonsta [the stick broke here], douchedons (?), or freshmen. This stick is for the sole use of the RPI Pep Band. Damn it [[Lyle Newman|Lyle]]! We the students of the Pep Band officially decree that the city of Rochester sucks, just like Clarkson but not as bad. Damn its cold! Jay Bernardo Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap If you think about it, when you use a porta potty you are hovering inches above everyone else's crap. Damn it [[Lyle Newman|Lyle]]! I know I said it once, but it bears repeating now AHH! [too smudged to read]. I'd really like to finish this side but I'm running out of things to say that are remotely interesting. We got a touchdown WOO HOO! Trumpets, 1,2! Sieve Sieve Sieve Sieve Sieve! I'm done! Damn it [[Lyle Newman|Lyle]]!"

Stick of Shame

The Stick of Shame is a percussion mallet with a small rope tied around a hole on the end. It is passed down from one band member to another every so often upon said band member doing something "shameful." This can be anything from a poorly executed [[vetoing|veto]] to throwing a football on top of the [[J-Building]] bridge.

The Rensselaer Music Association (RMA) is composed of the student leaders of all of the musical groups on campus (and anyone else who wants to help out). It coordinates joint concerts of the groups as well as managing the instruments which are owned by RPI.

The RMA is has their practice rooms and GBMs inside [[J-Building]]. The Band uses the Large Rehearsal Room on Saturday mornings.

The Mayor's Cup competition is an annual hockey game held on the last Saturday in January between the [[Engineers]] and the [[Union College|Union Garnet Chargers]] hosted at [[MVP Arena, Albany, NY| MVP Arena]] (formerly Times Union Center) in Albany. This tradition started in 2013 for the men and included the women's teams in 2018. The mayors of both Troy and Schenectady perform a ceremonial puck drop before the game, with the mayor of Albany presenting the Mayor's Cup trophy to the victors. This game is considered a neutral site and non-league game, and therefore does not count towards [[ECAC Hockey|ECAC]] standing. Union has the edge in the men's cup 8-3, while the RPI women's team has been historically better in the cup with a record of 4-1.

=Notable Events/Trends=
* The Mayor's Cup (for both women's and men's teams) was canceled in 2021 due to the COVID pandemic.
* As of 2024, the results of the last 3 Mayor's Cups have been the same, with Union winning the men's contest and RPI winning the women's version of the trophy.

Quinnipiac University

When it joined the ECACHL for the [[2005-2006|2005-2006]] season, Quinnipiac's Men's and Women's teams initially played at the Northford Ice Pavilion in Northford, CT. This venue quickly became notorious for its poor ice conditions, limited seating, and extremely low ceiling. It was a community ice rink being used for Division I hockey. Quinnipiac's teams also played a few "home" games at Ingalls Rink at [[Yale University]] and the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, CT.

Quinnipiac remedied this problem early in 2007 when they opened the TD Banknorth Sports Center (now the M&T Bank Arena, not to be confused with [[Union College|Union's]] rink, M&T Bank Center), a combination basketball/hockey venue with better seating, sight lines, and team accommodations. The $52 million venue seats 3,286 for hockey, making it the 5th largest rink out of the 12 in the ECAC.

The [[Quinnipiac University Pep Band|Quinnipiac Pep Band]] was formed in approximately 2001 and is funded by the QU Athletic Department. Lack of funding and support by the school has kept the band from growing very large, and the band often faces severe heckling from rowdy students at games. When the RPI Pep Band last traveled to Quinnipiac, their band's leadership expressed interest in coming to a game at RPI, as the two bands got along well and had a good time.

The bands played together in 2007 for the [[2006-2007#March 17, 2007: Safety Band!|2006-2007 ECAC championships]] when the Bobcats took on the [[Clarkson University|Clarkson]] Golden Knights. Quinnipiac fans commented on the quality of music coming from the band that night, as they had grown accustomed to not hearing them at the TD Banknorth Sports Center. Quinnipiac's administration had issued a decree along with the new building that PA music would be played during stoppages and after goals, leaving the band with little to no opportunity to play during a game. This issue will be worked on for the coming season, so that both Quinnipiac's and visiting bands will have the opportunity to play for games at the TDBNSC.

Due to the short distance between Troy and Schenectady, the band attends every football and hockey game which RPI's teams play against the Dutchmen. 
Union fancies itself our chief rival, though they've only won one NCAA hockey championship in 2014. The schools are much bigger rivals in football, where the two teams compete for the [[Dutchman's Shoes]] trophy annually.

=Things to remember when going to Union=

As with trips to other schools, there is little room for people and instruments, so try to leave cases in the van or a bandmate's car. In addition, try to minimize any excess baggage (purses, backpacks, etc.), as there are staff waiting at the door to the arena that will search you. The staff are so dilligent because Union fans have a history of expessing their feelings via citrus. There is a "traditional throwing of the oranges" that is supposed to accompany Union's first goal of the night. This has and will lead to not only warnings, but delay of game penalties for Union's team. Because of this, no oranges are allowed to enter the arena (sorry if you have scurvy!).

It should also be noted that the Union fans take their rivalries seriously, and the band may not be welcomed warmly to their ice. They may not be [[Clarkson University|Clarkson]] fans, but "RPI sucks" is not an uncommon sound.

The women brought the game to overtime with an incredible performance by Reese Keating who kept out 43 of Colgate's 45 shots, but failed to win on the night with a final score of 2-1. The Band unfortunately did not clap for the team after the game as temperatures were dropping well into the negatives. Colgate fans were much more welcoming this time around. The band was only heckled by a handful of sober elementary schoolers.

Following an electrifying Freakout win the previous Saturday, the band traveled to Brown. The local alumni chapter was at this game and got a nice picture with the band. The Brown Pep Band didn't arrive until the third period, as their athletics department wanted them at a basketball game. Since they showed up late, they sat in the section next to our band, creating a thrilling atmosphere for the close game. An empty netter sealed a 3-1 RPI win! The hockey team fist bumped members of the band as they came onto the ice and tapped their sticks on the glass after the victory.

The band spent the afternoon at the Connecticut Post Mall before heading to the "Yale Whale" on their senior night. The band traded friendly barbs with the Yale Pep Band, we copied their turns during their fight song and they copied our conductor's arm motions during Hail. During the second intermission, one of their members came over with a Clash Royale match code and played against Jayden Loibl. Despite an attempted late comeback by Yale, RPI won their last regular season game 4-2! Once again, the hockey team came over to the band's section after the game. As the band quietly played [[398 - Hey! Baby!|Hey Baby!]] outside, Yale's band congratulated us, asked if they could "offend" us, and played [[F*ck You]] as we made a kick-line and danced the Cotton Eye Joe. The Engineers ended February with a 5-2-1 record. What a month!

==Background==

ECAC Hockey (Formerly the ECAC Hockey League, now also known by ECACH, or often just ECAC) is one of six Division I men's and 4 Division I women's ice hockey conferences. It is the only Division I conference in which the same list of teams compete in both the men's and women's leagues, and only achieved that status with the addition of RPI to the D-I women's hockey lineup in the 2006-2007 season.

The league is headquartered at the [[Times Union Center, Albany, NY|Times Union Center]] in Albany, NY, and is headed by Commissioner Steve Hagwell. Working under Hagwell are an assistant commissioner, men's and women's supervisors of officials, and related support staff. The league works closely with all member schools to create a fair and balanced schedule in which each team plays every other twice per season in league contests. This has been the case every year since 1986, except for 1999-2000 when Vermont canceled half of its season due to a hazing incident.

==Scheduling==
The league schedule is based on a travel partner system for both the men's and women's teams, where on any given weekend (assuming full league play), three pairs of teams (six teams total) will travel to the remaining three pairs of teams and play one game at each team in the pair. The current travel partners are:

*Brown and Yale
*Clarkson and St. Lawrence
*Colgate and Cornell
*Dartmouth and Harvard
*Princeton and Quinnipiac
*Rensselaer and Union

As an example of the travel partner system, on a given weekend, Brown and Yale may be on the road against Colgate and Cornell. On Friday night, Brown would play Colgate and Yale would play Cornell, while on Saturday night the matchups would switch so each team has played both partners once. Later in the season Colgate and Cornell would be on the road at Yale and Brown, where the second matchup against each team would occur.

Some teams dedicate a single weekend to playing their travel partner (RPI and Union have a "home and home" series where one game is played at RPI and one at Union in a single weekend) while others choose to schedule these games during weeknights and sometimes spread apart by several weeks. This scheduling is primarily left up to the individual schools.

==Competition In and Out of the ECAC==
While teams in the ECAC play a schedule comprised of roughly 2/3 to 3/4 league matchups, each team will play several out-of-conference games against teams from the other leagues. In D-I men's hockey, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and Hockey East are considered the other three powerhouse leagues, and often are the most desirable out-of-conference opponents as they reflect well on a team's strength of schedule at the end of the year, an important component of the NCAA Tournament selection process. Teams from Atlantic Hockey are typically weaker and occupy the lower echelons of the national rankings, and are often less desirable as out-of-conference opponents.

Many hockey fans outside the ECAC belittle the league and comment on its quality due to infrequent championship wins and relative lack of contenders in the NCAA tournament. Most commonly this disparity is attributed to the lack of scholarships on many ECAC teams. Neither the Ivy League schools (Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, Yale) nor Union offer athletic scholarships to their players, which makes recruiting top talent a difficult task. The other three powerhouse conferences are comprised in large part of large state schools with immense recruiting resources and scholarship dollars to match, luring many of the top high school and junior players away from the ECAC.

The women's league does not face quite so much scruitny, as members Dartmouth, Harvard, and St. Lawrence field quality competitive teams each year. Harvard and Dartmouth have several players from the 2006 Winter Olympics on their roster, and are frequently in the upper levels of the national rankings.

The ECAC men's league is considered one of the most competitive top-to-bottom, where many seasons' standings are not even close to being concrete until the final weekend of play. Rarely is there a dominant team that destroys all its opponents, nor is there a single team with whom the floor is wiped. In the 2006-2007 season, with one week of play remaining, any of six out of twelve teams still had the potential for either home or road playoffs in the first round, and only 5 points separated the bottom seven teams in the league.

==Background==

ECAC Hockey (Formerly the ECAC Hockey League, now also known by ECACH, or often just ECAC) is one of six Division I men's and 4 Division I women's ice hockey conferences. It is the only Division I conference in which the same list of teams compete in both the men's and women's leagues, and only achieved that status with the addition of RPI to the D-I women's hockey lineup in the 2006-2007 season.

The league is headquartered at the [[Times Union Center, Albany, NY|Times Union Center]] in Albany, NY, and is headed by Commissioner Steve Hagwell. Working under Hagwell are an assistant commissioner, men's and women's supervisors of officials, and related support staff. The league works closely with all member schools to create a fair and balanced schedule in which each team plays every other twice per season in league contests. This has been the case every year since 1986, except for 1999-2000 when Vermont canceled half of its season due to a hazing incident.

==Scheduling==
The league schedule is based on a travel partner system for both the men's and women's teams, where on any given weekend (assuming full league play), three pairs of teams (six teams total) will travel to the remaining three pairs of teams and play one game at each team in the pair. The current travel partners are:

*Clarkson and St. Lawrence
*Colgate and Cornell
*Dartmouth and Harvard
*Princeton and Quinnipiac
*Rensselaer and Union

As an example of the travel partner system, on a given weekend, Brown and Yale may be on the road against Colgate and Cornell. On Friday night, Brown would play Colgate and Yale would play Cornell, while on Saturday night the matchups would switch so each team has played both partners once. Later in the season Colgate and Cornell would be on the road at Yale and Brown, where the second matchup against each team would occur.

Some teams dedicate a single weekend to playing their travel partner (RPI and Union have a "home and home" series where one game is played at RPI and one at Union in a single weekend) while others choose to schedule these games during weeknights and sometimes spread apart by several weeks. This scheduling is primarily left up to the individual schools.

==Competition In and Out of the ECAC==
While teams in the ECAC play a schedule comprised of roughly 2/3 to 3/4 league matchups, each team will play several out-of-conference games against teams from the other leagues. In D-I men's hockey, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and Hockey East are considered the other three powerhouse leagues, and often are the most desirable out-of-conference opponents as they reflect well on a team's strength of schedule at the end of the year, an important component of the NCAA Tournament selection process. Teams from Atlantic Hockey are typically weaker and occupy the lower echelons of the national rankings, and are often less desirable as out-of-conference opponents.

Many hockey fans outside the ECAC belittle the league and comment on its quality due to infrequent championship wins and relative lack of contenders in the NCAA tournament. Most commonly this disparity is attributed to the lack of scholarships on many ECAC teams. Neither the Ivy League schools (Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, Yale) nor Union offer athletic scholarships to their players, which makes recruiting top talent a difficult task. The other three powerhouse conferences are comprised in large part of large state schools with immense recruiting resources and scholarship dollars to match, luring many of the top high school and junior players away from the ECAC.

RPI's sports teams are known as the Engineers. The teams for men's and women's hockey, track and field, indoor track, cross country, football and tennis have always been known as the Engineers, while the rest of the varsity sports teams were known as the Red Hawks until 9/10/09 when the institute announced it would change all team names to the Engineers, reverting to the method used years ago by the school. The pep band will most commonly play at home men's and women's hockey games, as well as home football games. Every home men's hockey and football game is broadcasted by [[WRPI 91.5 FM]], RPI's college radio station.

===Blackout===
Blackout, formerly [[Black Friday]], started during the [[2003-2004]] season to honor the passing of women's hockey coach Bill Cahill and equipment manager Tom Cavosie. This game now takes place on the first home [[ECAC Hockey]] game of the season. Free admission is given to all students wearing black, and members of the band are given [[Black Friday T-shirts|black t-shirts]] which they wear over their regular [[Rugby Shirts|rugby shirts]]. The team also wears special black jerseys for the game which are raffled off for charity afterwards. In 2010, Black Friday was replaced with Black Saturday.

===Dutchman's Shoes Trophy Game===
Every year, the Engineers play [[Union College|Union]] for possession of the [[Dutchman's Shoes|Dutchman's Shoes Trophy]]. Dating back to 1886, it is the oldest college football rivalry in New York State. Since 1950 (when the trophy was introduced), Union leads the series 52–24. As of Spring 2026, the Shoes reside at Union.

===Transit Trophy Game===
Every year, the Engineers play [[Worcester Polytechnic Institute]] (WPI) for possession of the [[Transit Trophy]]. Since 1980 (when the trophy was introduced), RPI leads the series 21-10-1. At the current date, the Transit Trophy resides at RPI.

RPI's sports teams are known as the Engineers. The teams for men's and women's hockey, track and field, indoor track, cross country, football and tennis have always been known as the Engineers, while the rest of the varsity sports teams were known as the Red Hawks until 9/10/09 when the institute announced it would change all team names to the Engineers, reverting to the method used years ago by the school. The pep band will most commonly play at home men's and women's hockey games, as well as home football games. Every home men's hockey and football game is broadcasted by [[WRPI 91.5 FM]], RPI's college radio station.

Blackout, formerly [[Black Friday]], started during the [[2003-2004]] season to honor the passing of women's hockey coach Bill Cahill and equipment manager Tom Cavosie. Free admission is given to all students wearing black, and members of the band are given [[Black Friday T-shirts|black t-shirts]] which they wear over their regular [[Rugby Shirts|rugby shirts]]. The team also wears special black jerseys for the game which are raffled off for charity afterwards. In 2010, Black Friday was replaced with Black Saturday.

It consists of a women's game and men's game held in the [[MVP Arena, Albany, NY|MVP Arena]] in Albany, NY. It often has a large turnout, given RPI and Union are both local in the area, making it one of the largest venues the band plays for.

===White-Out===
[[White-Out]] started during the [[2004-2005]] season under the name "White-Out Wednesday" as a gimmick to draw a crowd for a rare mid-week game. The [[White-Out]] game has since become an annual event whose scheduling remains somewhat mysterious to the band. RPI is 2-4 (or 2-5) all-time in White-Out games.

At first, the conductor was present to keep the band on the same beat (no pun intended). The current system of two associate and two executive managers has not always been in place. Before the Spring 2019 semester, the band had only two concurrently elected managers. One election was held per year and there was an understood one-year commitment that the electee would serve. A manager will henceforth serve one semester as associate manager, and one semester as executive manager. Before the mid-1980s, the band had a senior band manager and an assistant band manager. One election was held per year and there was an understood two-year commitment that the electee would serve the first year as assistant manager and the second year as senior manager.

RPI's sports teams are known as the Engineers. The teams for men's and women's hockey, track and field, indoor track, cross country, football and tennis have always been known as the Engineers, while the rest of the varsity sports teams were known as the Red Hawks until 9/10/09 when the institute announced it would change all team names to the Engineers, reverting to the method used years ago by the school. The pep band will most commonly play at home men's and women's hockey games, as well as home football games. Every home men's hockey and football game is broadcasted by [[WRPI 91.5 FM]], RPI's college radio station.

===Blackout===
Blackout, formerly [[Black Friday]], started during the [[2003-2004]] season to honor the passing of women's hockey coach Bill Cahill and equipment manager Tom Cavosie. This game now takes place on the first home [[ECAC Hockey]] game of the season. Free admission is given to all students wearing black, and members of the band are given [[Black Friday T-shirts|black t-shirts]] which they wear over their regular [[Rugby Shirts|rugby shirts]]. The team also wears special black jerseys for the game which are raffled off for charity afterwards. In 2010, Black Friday was replaced with Black Saturday.

===Mayor's Cup===
The [[Mayor's Cup]] is an annual matchup between RPI and [[Union College|Union]] in January. It consists of a women's game and men's game held in the [[MVP Arena, Albany, NY|MVP Arena]] in Albany, NY. It often has a large turnout, given RPI and Union are both local in the area, making it one of the largest venues the band plays for.

===White-Out===
[[White-Out]] started during the [[2004-2005]] season under the name "White-Out Wednesday" as a gimmick to draw a crowd for a rare mid-week game. The [[White-Out]] game has since become an annual event whose scheduling remains somewhat mysterious to the band. RPI is 2-4 (or 2-5) all-time in White-Out games.

Like for hockey, there are a few football games over the course of the season that carry special significance.

===Dutchman's Shoes Trophy Game===
Every year, the Engineers play [[Union College|Union]] for possession of the [[Dutchman's Shoes|Dutchman's Shoes Trophy]]. Dating back to 1886, it is the oldest college football rivalry in New York State. Since 1950 (when the trophy was introduced), Union leads the series 52–24. As of Spring 2026, the Shoes reside at Union.

===Transit Trophy Game===
Every year, the Engineers play [[Worcester Polytechnic Institute]] (WPI) for possession of the [[Transit Trophy]]. Since 1980 (when the trophy was introduced), RPI leads the series 21-10-1. At the current date, the Transit Trophy resides at RPI.

===Shot Glass Trophy Game===
From 1944 to [[2005-2006|2005]], the Engineers played the Coast Guard Academy for possession of the [[Shot Glass Trophy]]. Coast Guard leads the series 33-19-2, though they've only won 7 times since 1985. The series between the two schools ended following Coast Guard's departure from the [[Liberty League]] following the 2005 season. Since RPI won the most recent game of the series, the Shot Glass Trophy resides at RPI in the '87 gym.

The teams for men's and women's hockey, track and field, indoor track, cross country, football and tennis have always been known as the Engineers, while the rest of the varsity sports teams were known as the Red Hawks until 9/10/09 when the institute announced it would change all team names to the Engineers, reverting to the method used years ago by the school. ==Big Games==
Like for hockey, there are a few football games over the course of the season that carry special significance.

===Dutchman's Shoes Trophy Game===
Every year, the Engineers play [[Union College|Union]] for possession of the [[Dutchman's Shoes|Dutchman's Shoes Trophy]]. Dating back to 1886, it is the oldest college football rivalry in New York State. Since 1950 (when the trophy was introduced), Union leads the series 51–24. At the current date, the Shoes reside at RPI.

===Transit Trophy Game===
Every year, the Engineers play [[Worcester Polytechnic Institute]] (WPI) for possession of the [[Transit Trophy]]. Since 1980 (when the trophy was introduced), RPI leads the series 21-10-1. At the current date, the Transit Trophy resides at RPI.

===Shot Glass Trophy Game===
From 1944 to [[2005-2006|2005]], the Engineers played the Coast Guard Academy for possession of the [[Shot Glass Trophy]]. Coast Guard leads the series 33-19-2, though they've only won 7 times since 1985. The series between the two schools ended following Coast Guard's departure from the [[Liberty League]] following the 2005 season. Since RPI won the most recent game of the series, the Shot Glass Trophy resides at RPI in the '87 gym.

Air Horn

The air horn is located in the roof of the [[Houston Field House]]. After the men's or women's [[Engineers#Hockey|hockey team]] [[Goal Celebration|scores a goal]], the horn is sounded.

At current, the horn is not sounded at club hockey games.

The notes of the air horn were determined by [[Will Schmarder]] to be Concert C, Eb, and G. Although there are three horns, only Concert C and Concert Eb are easily heard today.
