Gary: All teams are now known as the Engineers.

RPI's sports teams are known as the Engineers. The teams for men's and women's hockey, track and field, indoor track, cross country, football and tennis have always been known as the Engineers, while the rest of the varsity sports teams were known as the Red Hawks until 9/10/09 when the institute announced it would change all team names to the Engineers, reverting to the method used years ago by the school. The pep band will most commonly play at home men's and women's hockey games, as well as home football games. Every home men's hockey and football game is broadcasted by WRPI 91.5 FM, RPI's college radio station.
Big Games (Men's)
Like football, there are a number of games over the course of the season that carry special significance.

Big Red Freakout!
For information on Freakout, see this page.

Black Friday
Started during the 2003-2004 season, this game takes place on the first home ECAC Hockey game of the season. Free admission is given to all students wearing black. The members of the band are given black T-shirts which they wear over their regular rugby shirts. The team also wears special black jerseys for the game which are raffled off for charity afterwards.
Big Games
Like hockey, there are a number of games over the course of the season that carry special significance.

Game vs. Union (Dutchman's Shoes Trophy)
Every year, the RPI and Union football teams play for possession of the Dutchman's Shoes. At 106 games, it is the oldest college rivalry in New York state. Union leads the series (since the shoes were introduced) 44-15. At the current date, the shoes reside at RPI, in the '87 gym.

Game vs. Coast Guard (Shotglass Trophy)
From 1944 to 2005, the RPI and Coast Guard Academy football teams played for possession of the Shotglass Trophy. Coast Guard leads the series 33-19-2, though they've only won 7 times since 1985. The series between the two schools ended following Coast Guard's departure from the Liberty League following the 2005 season. Since RPI won the most recent game, the Shotglass Trophy resides at RPI, in the '87 gym.

Game vs. WPI (Transit Trophy)
Every year, the RPI and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) football teams play each other for possession of the Transit Trophy. Since the trophy was introduced in 1980, RPI leads the series 20-8-1. At current, the transit resides at RPI, in the '87 gym.

Road Trips
October 11, 2008: If You Die in Canada, You Die in Real Life
The band (over 50 people in all) traveled to Quebec City, PQ for the season opener against Vermont. The game was held at the Pavillon de la Jeunesse, and the team lost 1-4.
October 24-25, 2008: Men's Hockey, Governor's Cup
December 5-6, 2008: Women's Hockey @ Quinnipiac & Princeton, Men's Hockey @ Yale
Because of the short distance between Quinnipiac and Yale (~10 miles) and fortunate timing, the band traveled to three away games in two days. The women's team won their games against Quinnipiac and Princeton (2-1 and 3-2 respectively) while the men's team lost to Yale 3-7.
January 23-24, 2008: Men's Hockey @ St. Lawrence & Clarkson
RPI beat SLU 7-6 at 9 seconds into overtime. The fans heckled the RPI band to the point of throwing trash at the band.
Although Clarkson beat RPI, it was more welcoming to be at Cheel Arena and hear "RPI still sucks" from Clarkson fans than being at the SLU game.

For the 2008-2009 season, Black Friday will be the game on November 7, 2008 against Harvard.

About this song
"Are You Gonna Be My Girl?" is originally recorded by Jet. This version is arranged by Paul Murtha.
Instrumentation requirements
A strong trombone section is necessary, as they have the verse melody from measure 17 to 36.
Roadmap
The actual song starts with a tambourine solo. The band usually doesn't do that because no one would hear it, nor is it included in the band's arrangement. However, it was included for the 2008 Troy Savings Bank Music Hall Concert.
History
This song has taken on a tradition similar to 142 - Gimme' Some Lovin', in that the band yells "NO!" whenever it is called by the conductor.<br>
Recently members of the band have been yelling "GO!" as a pickup into measure 9 and "I said, are you gonna be my girl?" in measures 61-62 (with pickup), mirroring the actual song.

Not to spoil the fun, but I wouldn't distribute TSBMH recordings outside of Pep Band Members/Alumni. TSBMH officials/employees/volunteers/drones - like any professional recording/performance venue - are rather strict on forbidding any sort of recording: audio, video, or even just photos. Liscencing issues aside, it's the fact that venues consider a live recording a reflection upon not only the group, but the venue itself. And if the recording isn't done to their satisfaction, it reflects poorly on them and damages their reputation. For a place like TSBMH, this would be a HUGE deal. Granted, I'm out of the loop on things and RMA may have already saught permission for recordings (something which is definitely an option to pursue, at least occassionally - they're typically rather polite about things if you ask first), and granted it's rather difficult to enforce this after the fact since digital records are hard to guarantee destroyed, but I thought you guys should know. ==Notes==
*This recording has presumably been made and should be posted shortly.
*In the program for this concert, the information for performers and songs is fabricated by RMA Publicity Coordinator Jenny Blanchard. Since the band was busy (as always) this spring with a number of events and the officer changeovers, an arbitrary deadline was missed for the band to send in a set list and performers for the concert. This led to the fabrication of the band's information in lieu of a message of "information for this group was unavailable at the time of printing." Needless to say, this was an extremely unprofessional act. At that point the band hadn't even had a rehearsal for the concert let alone figured everything out for it. The roster is composed of songs from the active setlist playing the different instruments of a kazoo choir, with a set list of made-up songs. A new version of the program was printed with the correct information.

Background
ECAC Hockey (Formerly the ECAC Hockey League, now also known by ECACH, or often just ECAC) is one of six Division I men's and 4 Division I women's ice hockey conferences. It is the only Division I conference in which the same list of teams compete in both the men's and women's leagues, and only achieved that status with the addition of RPI to the D-I women's hockey lineup in the 2006-2007 season.

The league is headquartered at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY, and is headed by Commissioner Steve Hagwell. Working under Hagwell are an assistant commissioner, men's and women's supervisors of officials, and related support staff. The league works closely with all member schools to create a fair and balanced schedule in which each team plays every other twice per season in league contests. This has been the case every year since 1986, except for 1999-2000 when Vermont canceled half of its season due to a hazing incident.

Member Schools
* Brown Bears
* Clarkson Golden Knights
* Colgate Raiders
* Cornell Big Red
* Dartmouth Big Green
* Harvard Crimson
* Princeton Tigers
* Quinnipiac Bobcats
* St. Lawrence Saints
* Rensselaer Engineers
* Union Dutchmen (women's team known as the "Dutchwomen")
* Yale Bulldogs

Scheduling
The league schedule is based on a travel partner system for both the men's and women's teams, where on any given weekend (assuming full league play), three pairs of teams (six teams total) will travel to the remaining three pairs of teams and play one game at each team in the pair. The current travel partners are:

*Brown and Yale
*Clarkson and St. Lawrence
*Colgate and Cornell
*Dartmouth and Harvard
*Princeton and Quinnipiac
*Rensselaer and Union

As an example of the travel partner system, on a given weekend, Brown and Yale may be on the road against Colgate and Cornell. On Friday night, Brown would play Colgate and Yale would play Cornell, while on Saturday night the matchups would switch so each team has played both partners once. Later in the season Colgate and Cornell would be on the road at Yale and Brown, where the second matchup against each team would occur.

Some teams dedicate a single weekend to playing their travel partner (RPI and Union have a "home and home" series where one game is played at RPI and one at Union in a single weekend) while others choose to schedule these games during weeknights and sometimes spread apart by several weeks. This scheduling is primarily left up to the individual schools.

Competition In and Out of the ECAC
While teams in the ECAC play a schedule comprised of roughly 2/3 to 3/4 league matchups, each team will play several out-of-conference games against teams from the other leagues. In D-I men's hockey, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and Hockey East are considered the other three powerhouse leagues, and often are the most desirable out-of-conference opponents as they reflect well on a team's strength of schedule at the end of the year, an important component of the NCAA Tournament selection process. Teams from Atlantic Hockey and College Hockey America (CHA) are typically weaker and occupy the lower echelons of the national rankings, and are often less desirable as out-of-conference opponents.

Many hockey fans outside the ECAC belittle the league and comment on its quality due to infrequent championship wins and relative lack of contenders in the NCAA tournament. Most commonly this disparity is attributed to the lack of scholarships on many ECAC teams. Neither the Ivy League schools (Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, Yale) nor Union offer athletic scholarships to their players, which makes recruiting top talent a difficult task. The other three powerhouse conferences are comprised in large part of large state schools with immense recruiting resources and scholarship dollars to match, luring many of the top high school and junior players away from the ECAC.

The women's league does not face quite so much scruitny, as members Dartmouth, Harvard, and St. Lawrence field quality competitive teams each year. Harvard and Dartmouth have several players from the 2006 Winter Olympics on their roster, and are frequently in the upper levels of the national rankings.

The ECAC men's league is considered one of the most competitive top-to-bottom, where many seasons' standings are not even close to being concrete until the final weekend of play. Rarely is there a dominant team that destroys all its opponents, nor is there a single team with whom the floor is wiped. In the 2006-2007 season, with one week of play remaining, any of six out of twelve teams still had the potential for either home or road playoffs in the first round, and only 5 points separated the bottom seven teams in the league.

The women's league is slightly less balanced, with teams such as Dartmouth, Harvard, and St. Lawrence making strong showings on a regular basis while Cornell, Quinnipiac, and Union tend not to fare so well. Union's record in the 2006-2007 season was 0-22-0 in conference play. RPI finished 8th in its inaugural season in the league, clinching a playoff berth by beating Brown, Cornell, Quinnipiac, and Union in the standings.

Playoffs
Men's Playoffs
All twelve ECAC men's hockey teams are granted a chance to play in the ECAC playoffs. Seeding for the playoffs is determined by regular season standings at the conclusion of the final weekend of league play. Ties in the standings are resolved by head to head record then record against top teams in the league.

Teams seeded 1-4 at the end of the regular season are given a bye for the first round and get a week's rest before the quarterfinals the following week. Teams seeded 5-8 host teams seeded 9-12, such that the matchups are 5-12, 6-11, 7-10, 8-9 at the arena of the higher seed). The winners of the four first round games are reseeded and go on to play the top four teams in the quarterfinals, such that the team seeded 1 plays the lowest seed from the first round and the team seeded 4 plays the highest seed from the first round.

The four winners of the quarterfinal games proceed to the ECAC Championship Tournament at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY. The teams are reseeded and top seed plays bottom while the two middle teams play each other in a semifinal round. The two winners play in the championship game while the losers play a consolation game.

The winner of the ECAC Championship is awarded the Whitelaw Cup and given an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Women's Playoffs
Only the top eight out of twelve teams gain a berth in the ECAC women's hockey playoffs. The teams are seeded 1-12 based on the same criteria as the men's league at the end of regular season play, with seeds 9-12 eliminated and their season over. The playoffs consist of two rounds as opposed to the men's league's three.

In the quarterfinal round, seeds 1-4 host seeds 5-8, such that the matchups are 1-8, 2-7, 3-6, 4-5 at the arena of the higher seed. The four winning teams are reseeded and proceed on to the championship weekend, which takes place at the arena of the highest remaining seed. The newly seeded teams 1-4 and 2-3 play each other, and the victors go on to the championship game, while the losers play a consolation game for third place.

The winner of the ECAC Championship is given an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
*Unless anyone objects, I'm going to make a separate quotes page for each year since we started keeping track of years. On this page, I'll keep two or three of the best quotes from each year, and have the year title link to the separate page with all of the quotes from that year. That way we can have people putting whatever they want to remember on the wiki, but not have to search through a page of hundreds of quotes to find the ones that everyone remembers (as opposed to the ones that only a few people heard firsthand). This page is just in desperate need of cleaning up. If no one objects by Thursday, I'm just going to go ahead and do it.
October 26-27, 2007: Men's Hockey, Governor's Cup
Approximately forty members of the band performed at all four games of the Governor's Cup (held at the Times Union Center in Albany). The team won the tournament, beating Union 3-2 and Colgate 2-0.

November 9-10, 2007: Women's Hockey @ North Country
Overnight trip to Clarkson (Lost 1-2 (ot)) and St. Lawrence (Lost 0-3).

*The bus driver asked the Clarkson's women's hockey team where the hockey rink was.

November 10, 2007: Football @ Union
While much of the band was in the North Country for the women's overnight, 13 other members of the band went over to Schenectady to watch the football team play for the Dutchman's Shoes against Union. The team won 20-13, giving them their first win at Union since 1992 and their first successful defense of the Shoes since 1959. The win, combined with Hobart's victory over Rochester, gave RPI first place in the Liberty League and a berth in the NCAA tournament.

Following the football game, a few members of the band decided to make an unoffical roadtrip to Dartmouth (without instruments) to see the men's hockey team's game that evening, which they won 7-4.

December 1, 2007: If You Want My Comeback...
Men's hockey one night stand to Quinnipiac (Lost 2-3). During the breaks, the band played "Build Me Up Buttercup" and "Centerfold" with the Quinnipiac Pep Band.

December 29-30, 2007: Men's Hockey, Lightning Classic (Unofficial)
Eight members of the band (current and former) drove to Tampa, FL from the Northeast to play at the St. Pete Times Forum. RPI lost 3-2 and 3-1 against Colorado College and Notre Dame, respectively.

January 5, 2008: Women's Hockey @ Union
Carpooled over to Union for Women's hockey (Tied 4-4).

January 18, 2008: Men's Hockey @ Union
Carpooled over to Union for men's hockey (Lost 1-2). The band was told that it couldn't play during the period breaks as TW3 (who were broadcasting the game) were conducting interviews directly beneath the band's seats. However, during the first intermission, the zamboni sucked up a T-shirt which had poorly thrown by the girl throwing them into the crowd, causing the zamboni to require in excess of a half hour of repair before the second period could start. During this prolonged intermission the band performed several songs to entertain the crowd.
To the tune of the Marines' hymn:<br>

From the glorious heights of Prospect Park<br>
To the mud flats of Cohoes<br>
We will study hard, get drunk weekends<br>
And the rest Lord only knows<br>
We will drink to Troy’s fine maidens<br>
We will drink to Troy’s fine beer (FINE BEER!)<br>
And without a doubt someone will shout<br>
“Let us drink to Rensselaer!”<br>
<br>
After four or five long years have past<br>
We'll have finally cribbed our way.<br>
We will all get drunk down at the Ruck<br>
Just to celebrate the day.<br>
And when Jackson hands the sheepskins out<br>
We will all let out a cheer (here here!).<br>
For we’re going out of college<br>
And HOORAY for Rensselaer.<br>

Use
Much like Let's give a cheer, this song is sung by members of the band after the games while packing up our instruments.

Alternate Lyrics
The lyrics to this song have been updated several times over the course time to reflect changes in the President of the Institute and in what bars there are in Troy.<br>
Other notable alterations are the replacement of "here here!" in the second stanza with "FINE BEER!" and the occasional replacement of "HOORAY for" with "TO HELL with" in the last line.

Here is one of the old versions (:

From the glorious heights of Prospect Park<br>
To the mud flats of Cohoes,<br>
We will study hard, get drunk weekends,<br>
And the rest Lord only knows,<br>
We will drink to Troy’s fair virgins,<br>
We will drink to Troy’s good beer,<br>
And without a doubt someone will shout-<br>
“Let us drink to Rensselaer.”<br>
<br>
And when after four or five long years,<br>
We have finally cribbed our way,<br>
We will all get drunk down at the port,<br>
Just to celebrate the day,<br>
And when Houston hands the sheepskins out<br>
We will all let out a cheer-<br>
For we’re going out of college<br>
And "To Hell with Rensselaer!"<br>
The Dutchman's Shoes are a trophy awarded to the winner of the annual college football game between the RPI Engineers and the Union College Dutchmen since 1950. At present date, these two schools have played each other 105 times, making it the oldest football rivalry in the state of New York. The trophy consists of a wooden base, with two clogs mounted on a small pedestal, with one painted red with a white letter "R" and the other maroon with a white letter "U" for Rensselaer and Union, respectively. Currently, the Shoes reside in Troy, and overall Union leads the series 44-14. (Excerpts from Dutchmen's Shoes on Wikipedia.)

::Funny or not, I think it's unnecessary. It's pretty ridiculous when people are updating the wiki an hour after something's said. I think a good indicator on whether something should be included on the quotes page is if someone remembers that it happened after the fact, especially if it's not by the person that said the quote. ===Black Friday===

At 104 years, it is the oldest college rivalry in New York state. Union leads the series (since the shoes were introduced) 44-13.

Since the trophy was introduced in 1980, RPI leads the series 18-8-1. At current, the transit resides at RPI, in the '87 gym.

The air horn is located in the roof of the Houston Field House. After the men's hockey team scores a goal, the horn is sounded.

At current, the horn is not sounded at women's games, where some fans have taken to bringing portable air horns with them to make a similar noise when the team scores.

The notes of the air horn were determined by Will Schmarder to be Concert C, Eb, and G.
