:*Fat Bottomed Girls (again) - After actually playing this one through with a band, I've realized that this song has to be altered. Writing the song in the key of F wasn't a bad idea; making the trumpet 1 part start on an F#, however, was. Things always sound like they'll work when it's a midi. As of now, I've taken everything down a whole step (key of Eb), and I think it still sounds fine while making all of the parts a little more band friendly. Let me know what you think, and I'll ask for the forgiveness of the managers for using up their copy budget.

On, Wisconsin is almost exactly Hail, Dear Old Rensselaer, but in 4/4 time. Any part from On, Wisconsin can be exchanged for any part in Hail without any problems. However, Hail, Dear Old Rensselaer was written in 1825 by an undergraduate student as part of a URP, and therefore clearly was copied to write On, Wisconsin. (Since the University of Wisconsin was not even founded until 1848, clearly they were not the first to use this song.)
There are two versions of this cheer, the football and the hockey version. The football version is as written in the cheer sheet, and the slight difference is that in the hockey version, the vocal part is cut, with no pause where it would have been. This is due to the fact that there are no endzones or suitable analogies in hockey.
This cheer is based loosely on the military's Mess Call, a bugle call used to announce meals.

History
Jim Cronen started using Free Beer as a hockey cheer, just to increase the available repertoire of cheers. To differentiate the two versions of the cheer, the hockey version was announced as "Free Beer Minus Two Measures". Because it was clear when the two versions of the cheer were to be played, both versions eventually were called just "Free Beer".

When the conductor calls this cheer, it is customary for the band to yell "Where?".
__NOTOC__

Clarkson University is the second furthest ECAC venue from RPI (only St. Lawrence is further, but only by a few miles). Located in Potsdam, NY, it is only about 20 miles from the St. Lawrence River, which marks the border between the state of New York and the Canadian providence of Ontario.

The Cheel Center is arguably the nicest rink in the ECAC. As opposed to the Houston Field House, which lies far from the core of RPI's campus, the Cheel Center is actually part of Clarkson's student union. It is well lit, has ample seating (though still only 3/5 as much as the Houston Field House), and is generally a very nice arena. Do not take these compliments to suggest that the trip to Clarkson is a pleasant one, however.

Clarkson is the least inviting venue of all of any of the venues we travel to. Their fans are loud and obnoxious, even more so than Union's. During the band's last trip there, several members were verbally threatened by fans, and it is actually somewhat surprising that a fight did not actually break out, though several were close.

Clarkson's band is no better than their fans. They are equally loud and obnoxious, and show no respect for visiting bands. They will play over us, taunt us, and generally do anything they can to make us feel unwelcome. They also have a rather annoying habit of attempting to show up visiting bands (or home bands when they travel). They will scream something to the effect of "Hey <other team>'s band. This is how a pep band is supposed to sound!" Apparently, however, it is their band's opinion that pep bands are supposed to sound horrifically out of tune. This was especially apparent when they did this during RPI's trip in 2005, when they surrounded our band and started playing Louie, Louie. After a few bars, RPI's band joined in, and generally outplayed Clarkson's band in both volume and, more importantly, quality, even though the band was outnumbered by nearly 2:1.

In addition to being a very unpleasant place to go to, getting to or from Potsdam is a problem in and of itself. No major highways go anywhere near Potsdam, making the already long trip even longer. This was compounded in 2005, when the game took place during a blizzard. With no accommodations arranged for the night after the Saturday game, the band had no choice but to leave Potsdam and travel back to Troy. The band's bus followed the team's bus slowly down the nearly impassible roads, and did not arrive back in Troy until after 4:00 AM.

...(and Clarkson still sucks)

Where to stay
In 2005, the band rented out a significant portion of a small resort named "The Stone Fence" in Ogdensburg/Morristown, including two nice town houses for the senior members. It also had a fine view of Canada across the river. These cabins proved to be very nice locations for Friday evening's obligatory road trip party. The resort was also incredibly inexpensive, as the middle of the winter is certainly not high season for a summer resort. The resort is a bit of a drive from Potsdam (nearly an hour), but it is worth the trip.

What to do
Unfortunately, there's not really much to do around Potsdam. During the band's trip to the North Country in 2005, they spent the bulk of their Saturday at the St. Lawrence Centre, a mall in Massena which has a public, indoor skating rink in addition to a small assortment of stores and a food court.
The members of the band are given black T-shirts which they wear over their regular rugby shirts. The team also wears special black jerseys for the game which are raffled off for charity afterwards.
Big Games
Like hockey, there are a number of games over the course of the season that carry special significance.

Game vs. Union (Dutchman's Shoes Trophy)
Every year, the RPI and Union football teams play for possession of the Dutchman's Shoes. At 106 games, it is the oldest college rivalry in New York state. Union leads the series (since the shoes were introduced) 44-15. At the current date, the shoes reside at RPI, in the '87 gym.

Game vs. Coast Guard (Shotglass Trophy)
From 1944 to 2005, the RPI and Coast Guard Academy football teams played for possession of the Shotglass Trophy. Coast Guard leads the series 33-19-2, though they've only won 7 times since 1985. The series between the two schools ended following Coast Guard's departure from the Liberty League following the 2005 season. Since RPI won the most recent game, the Shotglass Trophy resides at RPI, in the '87 gym.

Game vs. WPI (Transit Trophy)
Every year, the RPI and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) football teams play each other for possession of the Transit Trophy. Since the trophy was introduced in 1980, RPI leads the series 20-8-1. At current, the transit resides at RPI, in the '87 gym.

Natural Noise Red is one of the two intramural ice hockey teams that split from the original Natural Noise team in spring 2008 due to an abundance of interest (and calls for more playing time by the players). The red team is geared towards people who haven't skated before or are looking for a less competitive atmosphere than the black team. In one season so far Natural Noise Red has amassed a record of 0-6-0 with 6 goals for and 44 goals allowed.
The larger of the band's two flags, The Big Flag is a copy of the official Rensselaer flag given to the band by former RPI President R. Byron Pipes. It is waved during hockey games during all playings of Hail.

For many years the flag was mounted between two roughly 8 foot long pieces of wood. Following the 2004-2005 season it was taken off of its mounting, cleaned, and put on a new 8 foot red hockey stick. The Big Flag is currently waved by ????.
Big Games (Men's)
Like football, there are a number of games over the course of the season that carry special significance.

Big Red Freakout!
For information on Freakout, see this page.
Black Friday
Started during the 2003-2004 season, this game takes place on the first home ECAC Hockey game of the season. Free admission is given to all students wearing black. The members of the band are given black T-shirts which they wear over their regular rugby shirts. The team also wears special black jerseys for the game which are raffled off for charity afterwards.

For the 2008-2009 season, Black Friday will be the game on November 7, 2008 against Harvard.
Big Games
Like hockey, there are a number of games over the course of the season that carry special significance.

Game vs. Union (Dutchman's Shoes Trophy)
Every year, the RPI and Union football teams play for possession of the Dutchman's Shoes. At 105 years, it is the oldest college rivalry in New York state. Union leads the series (since the shoes were introduced) 44-14.

Since the trophy was introduced in 1980, RPI leads the series 19-8-1. At current, the transit resides at RPI, in the '87 gym.

Things always sound like they'll work when it's a midi. As of now, I've taken everything down a whole step (key of Eb), and I think it still sounds fine while making all of the parts a little more band friendly. Let me know what you think, and I'll ask for the forgiveness of the managers for using up their copy budget.

About the song
The Alma Mater as written by Edmund Fales was published under the title "Here's to Old R.P.I." in the first book of Songs of Rensselaer printed in 1913. In 1918, there was some dissatisfaction expressed about the alma mater and the Phalanx sponsored a contest for a new school song. Because of the distraction of world war, there was little interest in producing a new song and only one entry was submitted. The Polytechnic Board, who was preparing a new edition of Songs of Rensselaer, attempted to resurrect the debate in the spring of 1920. A "large majority thinks the present song lacks the proper spirit, and that a new and more forceful song should be adopted." The song endured, however, and remains the Alma Mater of RPI. (Description courtesy of the RPI Institute Archives)

Lyrics
Here's to old RPI, her fame may never die.<br>
Here's to old Rensselaer, she stands today without a peer.<br>
Here's to those olden days,<br>
Here's to those golden days,<br>
Here's to the friends we made at dear old RPI.<br>

Roadmap
The song begins with a single trumpet playing the concert G on which the melody begins. The conductor counts off and the band plays the song once through, then repeats the song singing the lyrics instead of playing. The percussion traditionally joins back in for the last 4 measures of the vocal repeat, at which point the crowd often yells the final "RPI" quite loudly.

Dances
While playing Alma Mater, the band sways back and forth each measure (i.e.- to the left one measure, then to the right the next). The sway always starts to the person's LEFT regardless of orientation to the conductor/rest of the band (Exception-conductors will occasionally sway inverted to the rest of the band).

History
At the start of the 2005-06 hockey season, the band began going up into the stands to play Alma Mater during the second period break. It was well received, so the band still does it today.

About this song
"Are You Gonna Be My Girl?" is originally recorded by Jet. This version is arranged by Paul Murtha.
Instrumentation requirements
A strong trombone section is necessary, as they have the verse melody from measure 17 to 36.
Roadmap
The actual song starts with a tambourine solo. The band usually doesn't do that because no one would hear it, nor is it included in the band's arrangement. However, it was included for the 2008 Troy Savings Bank Music Hall Concert.
History
This song has taken on a tradition similar to 142 - Gimme' Some Lovin', in that the band yells "NO!" whenever it is called by the conductor.<br>
Recently members of the band have been yelling "GO!" as a pickup into measure 9 and "I said, are you gonna be my girl?" in measures 61-62 (with pickup), mirroring the actual song.
The original version of this song, by CCR, is just over 3 minutes in length. Our arrangement, played at the correct tempo, would be about the same. The song, however, is not particularly "peppy", so at some point, it was decided that the song should be played faster. This modification snowballed into an odd tradition of playing the song as fast as humanly possible - previously referred to as "on crack" in order to differentiate from playing it normally. The current "record time" on this song is somewhere around 42 seconds, which translates to a tempo of approximately quarter note = 360, or about 6 beats per second.

At the recording of America's Pep Band in 2001, it was clocked at 56.5 seconds.
When other pep bands play this cheer, one of our trumpets will typically play the solo at the end.<br>
This cheer was added to the cheer sheets in January 2007, when the cheer sheets were rewritten to add songs and make the print more legible. Prior to 2007, the cheer was unwritten, save for the solo at the end. While in Steve's possession, that copy of the solo was lost, so it was written into the cheer sheets to prevent future problems.<br>
Dan Schwarting tried the solo on a mellophone at a women's game in Feburary 2007. Results were far less than spectacular.
On this page, I'll keep two or three of the best quotes from each year, and have the year title link to the separate page with all of the quotes from that year. That way we can have people putting whatever they want to remember on the wiki, but not have to search through a page of hundreds of quotes to find the ones that everyone remembers (as opposed to the ones that only a few people heard firsthand). As of now, I've taken everything down a whole step (key of Eb), and I think it still sounds fine while making all of the parts a little more band friendly. Let me know what you think, and I'll ask for the forgiveness of the managers for using up their copy budget.

When it joined the ECACHL for the 2005-2006 season, Quinnipiac's Men's and Women's teams initially played at the Northford Ice Pavilion in Northford, CT. This venue quickly became notorious for its poor ice conditions, limited seating, and extremely low ceiling. It was a community ice rink being used for Division I hockey. Quinnipiac's teams also played a few "home" games at Ingalls rink at Yale University and the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, CT.

Quinnipiac remedied this problem early in 2007 when they opened the TD Banknorth Sports Center, a combination basketball/hockey venue with better seating, sight lines, and team accommodations. The $52 million venue seats 3,286 for hockey, making it the 5th largest rink out of the 12 in the ECAC.

The Quinnipiac Pep Band was formed in approximately 2001 and is funded by the QU Athletic Department. Lack of funding and support by the school has kept the band from growing very large, and the band often faces severe heckling from rowdy students at games. When the RPI Pep Band last traveled to Quinnipiac, their band's leadership expressed interest in coming to a game at RPI, as the two bands got along well and had a good time.

The bands played together in 2007 for the 2006-2007 ECAC championships when the Bobcats took on the Clarkson Golden Knights. Quinnipiac fans commented on the quality of music coming from the band that night, as they had grown accustomed to not hearing them at the TD Banknorth Sports Center. Quinnipiac's administration had issued a decree along with the new building that PA music would be played during stoppages and after goals, leaving the band with little to no opportunity to play during a game. This issue will be worked on for the coming season, so that both Quinnipiac's and visiting bands will have the opportunity to play for games at the TDBNSC.
