History
This cheer is traditionally started by either low wind/brass or the bass drum. The rest of the low brass/percussion then come in, and then the rest of the band. There is a solo ad lib trumpet part in between the melody that the rest of the band plays. The cheer can be repeated several times, and due to this it is frequently used to kill extra time in period breaks and occasionally time outs. The cheer ends with the melody cutting out, then the low brass and percussion, until only the bass drum is left.
Dances
The flutes, oboes, and clarinets (and anyone else who is so inclined) leave their instruments and do the handjive at the front of the stage.

Other instruments (saxophones, tubas, mellophones, and anyone else not on the chairs in the back row) form into a line and walk around the stage in an impromptu game of follow-the-leader.

On rare occasions, the band has marched all the way around the Field House while playing this.

During rare occasions in the late 1990s, at the end of the second intermission, the band would start Handjive on the stage and then collectively march to the walkway behind sections 22, 33, and 44. The band would finish Handjive when the referees began their third period warmup skate, and play Hail when the team emerged from the tunnel directly below them. This was eventually nixed by Field House staff who deemed it a fire hazard.
There are two versions of this cheer, the football and the hockey version. The football version is as written in the cheer sheet, and the slight difference is that in the hockey version, the vocal part is cut, with no pause where it would have been. This is due to the fact that there are no endzones or suitable analogies in hockey.

History
Jim Cronen started using Free Beer as a hockey cheer, just to increase the available repertoire of cheers. To differentiate the two versions of the cheer, the hockey version was announced as "Free Beer Minus Two Measures". Because it was clear when the two versions of the cheer were to be played, both versions eventually were called just "Free Beer".

When the conductor calls this cheer, it is customary for the band to yell "Where?".
This cheer is never officially called. It is typically started by a percussionist, ideally on the bass drum, with the familiar rhythm, followed by other instruments joining in. This cheer is only typically done when a fight is starting or has started on the ice.

The BU cheer is played by just about every pep band in existence, during football, basketball, hockey, and quidditch matches. The chromatic five-note cheer can be played with just about any harmonic accompaniment, but RPI's band plays it in unison, with occasional ad libbing by individual players (trumpets and trombones in particular).

Usually, BU is one of the first three cheers out of the band in the beginning of a game, and is usually repeated two or three times throughout the length of the contest. Notably, Jim Cronen conducted one hockey game during the 1997-1998 season intentionally avoiding BU. This was an accomplishment, given the band's frequent use of the cheer.
There is a birth record for a man of the name A. Olin Niles in the town of Shaftsbury, Vermont. It is not certain as to whether this is the same A. Olin Niles, but given the geographic proximity and the similar unusual name, it is quite possible. The birth year also matches that calculated from a Poly article of December 2, 1981 that quoted Niles' age as 88 at that time.

A. Olin Niles was born on April 10, 1893 in Shaftsbury, Vermont, to Martin L. Niles and Alice (Huntington) Niles. The roots of America's Pep Band can be traced back to 1923, when A. Olin Niles organized the school's second musical group (the Glee Club had been formed about 45 years earlier). Mr. Niles had been performing in the pit of the American Theatre in the days of silent films. The President of the Union asked him to start a music program at the Institute, and Mr. Niles complied. As the talking pictures came into being, orchestras such as the one at the American became less popular and Niles was able to devote more time to the Engineer ensemble. In the early days, the band not only played at athletic events, but also gave concerts and played at dances. The group performed for the lacrosse, hockey, basketball and football teams, and would play not only the RPI school song, but also the alma mater of the opposing squad. In 1954, when the hockey team won the NCAA championship, the band took two busses and greeted them at the airport. Membership grew and through the years players broke off to form other musical groups. Niles, who was a big fan of the marches of Sousa, Goldman, and others, retired in 1973 after 50 years of service. (Excerpts from RPI Pep Band on Wikipedia.)

Mr. Niles is deceased, though the date and place are unknown.

Instrumentation requirements
This song needs at least 4 or 5 trumpets, with at least two on first.
Roadmap
To better match the original recording, the song starts with a trumpet soli (the original starts with 8 measures a cappella). The trumpets start at measure 26 and play through the end of measure 32, then there is a measure of drums, then the song starts back at measure 1. From there, it is played as written.
History
This song was introduced by conductor Ray Kim in 1996. It has since been a long-standing staple of the band. It will likely never be retired.

There is a birth record for a man of the name A. Olin Niles here. It is not certain as to whether this is the same A. Olin Niles, but given the geographic proximity and the similar unusual name, it is quite possible. The birth year also matches that calculated from a Poly article of December 2, 1981 that quoted Niles' age as 88 at that time.

Mr. Niles is believed to be deceased — if he were alive today he would be 113 years old.

History
A quote from the Polytechnic student newspaper, December 2, 1981.

At its founding in the early 1920's, the band had eight members and often had to hire professionals to complete an orchestra. Today, the band fields 76 pieces including 38 woodwinds, 32 brass, and 6 percussion instruments. The roots of the band can actually be traced back to 1923, when a local musician named A. Olin Niles organized the school's second musical group (the Glee Club had been formed about 45 years earlier.) Mr. Niles had been performing in the pit of the American Theatre in the days of silent films. The President of the Union asked him to start a music program at the Institute, and Mr. Niles complied. As the talkies (modern movies) came into being, orchestras such as the one at the American became less popular and Niles was able to devote more time to the Engineer ensemble. Now 88 and living in Troy, he remains an avid fan of RPI sports.
It is not certain as to whether this is the same A. Olin Niles, but given the geographic proximity and the similar unusual name, it is quite possible.
The current system of two concurrently elected managers has not always been in place. Before the mid-1980s, the band had a senior band manager and an assistant band manager. One election was held per year and there was an understood two-year commitment that the electee would serve the first year as assistant manager and the second year as senior manager.

Below, after 1985, the two managers listed were managers concurrently. Before 1985, the first listed name was the senior manager and the second (in parentheses) was the assistant manager.

I graduated RPI with a bachelor's degree in physics in 1996 and a master's degree in 1999. I currently work as a physics and chemistry teacher at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons School in Schenectady, NY.
Roadtripped to the north country (Clarkson and St. Lawrence) and got snowed in to get a rare two-night road trip. We also went back to Lake Placid for the ECAC Tournament and stayed in the White Sled. We did win.
Played euphonium for one game a mere 32 hours after getting my wisdom teeth removed. Made it most of the way into the second period, after which I decided the pain was getting to be too much and I moved over to snare for the rest of the game.
*1996-1997: Lived in Summit, New Jersey and worked at Bloomberg LP in Manhattan. Robin Thomas, my then-girlfriend and now-wife, was still attending RPI and so I was up to visit every other weekend. The tuba section was down to zero, so I volunteered to play sousaphone before the first football game. Learned sousaphone in the hour between the end of rehearsal and the start of the football game. Played sousaphone for the rest of the year. Roadtripped to Yale (I drove up from New York City) and Lake Placid.
We roadtripped with the football team to Worcester State College. Roadtripped with the hockey team to Colgate and Cornell. Spearheaded the unofficial road trip to Princeton and the band's first performance at Hobey Baker Rink in more than a decade. Lost to Cornell in the ECAC Quarterfinals and did not go to Lake Placid.
*1998-1999: Played alto saxophone. Enjoyed tormenting Bill von Achen, the new conductor. Hail, Dear Old Rensselaer was written by A. Olin Niles. This is our fight song.
Occasionally there is a call for non-playing band members to sing, or for the RPI community to sing along to Hail. Here are the lyrics, as written by A. Olin Niles:

:Hail, dear old Rensselaer, the college of our heart
:For dear old Rensselaer, we all must do our part (FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!)
:True to old Rensselaer, we'll always strive to be
:Now, dear old Rensselaer, hail to thee
:Hear the tramp, tramp, tramp of marching feet
:Hear the rat-tat-tat of drums that beat
:Hear the voices ringing loud and sweet
:Hear that mighty shout of...
Note that prior to the admittance of women to RPI in 1942, the refrain's 2nd and 3rd lines were sung as:

:For dear old Rensselaer, each man must do his part
:True sons of Rensselaer, we'll always strive to be

"Alternate" lyrics intended to be sung in a lazy manner, are:
:Blah, blah blah Rensselaer, blah blah blah blah blah blah
:Blah, blah blah Rensselaer, blah blah blah blah blah blah (FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!)
:Blah, blah blah Rensselaer, blah blah blah blah blah blah
:Blah, blah blah Rensselaer, blaaaah, blaaaah, blaaaaaaaaah.

Roadmap
The conductor begins by screaming, "Trumpets... One! Two!"

The song is played as written, with the exception that the conductor has discretion to instruct the band to play the sixteen measure breakstrain and to Da Capo. This is very rarely done more than once, and then only for good reason. Jim Cronen once played the breakstrain twice as music to cover up a skirmish that erupted on the ice after the clock had hit zero and the game was over.

The short form of Hail, without the breakstrain, is used after goals in hockey or after scores in football. During hockey games, the vocal cheer We Want More then immediately follows Hail.

The long form of Hail, with the breakstrain, is used when the hockey team comes onto or leaves the ice at the beginning or end of a period of play. It is also used when the band plays at miscellaneous school functions.

History
Although Hail may officially be catalogged as number 41, the number is never used. The song is simply known as Hail.

To be completed.

This cheer is performed immediately after Hail when the Engineers score a goal during a hockey game.

The band and game spectators count off the team's total score while waving one arm towards the opposing goalie. For example, if the Engineers have just scored their third goal, the crowd and band would chant:

:"One, two, three, we want more! Sieve! Sieve! Sieve! Sieve! Sieve!..."

The word "sieve" is repeated an indefinite number of times, and while the first two or three chants of "sieve" are in unison, the chant eventually devolves into applause. It is also customary for the bass drum to be struck along with each word of the cheer.
