RPI has been participating in Relay since 2006, holding the event on '86 Field in mid to late April. The band has also been playing at Relay since 2006. Additionally, the band has fielded a team for Relay since 2007.

In the first year of the event the band played down on the field amongst the rest of the participants, but has played in the JEC walkway every year since. In 2011 the band played in front of the stage at the corner of the field near the Greene Building. In 2012 it was unseasonably cold and Relay was held in the Armory instead. The band played on the stage set up in the middle of the track.

Karger: adding new season

1923-1974: Pre-History
Prior to the 1973-1974 school year, the RPI Pep Band was run by a salaried manager rather than by student managers. The one and only non-student manager was A. Olin Niles, the arranger of the "Hail, Dear Old Rensselaer" chart that the Pep Band still plays.

From a 12/2/81 issue of The Polytechnic:

"At its founding in the early 1920s, the band had eight members and often had to hire professionals to complete an orchestra. Today, the band fields 76 pieces including 38 woodwinds, 32 brass, and 6 percussion instruments. The roots of the band can actually be traced back to 1923, when a local musician named A. Olin Niles organized the school's second musical group (the Glee Club had been formed about 45 years earlier.) Mr. Niles had been performing in the pit of the American Theatre in the days of silent films. The President of the Union asked him to start a music program at the Institute, and Mr. Niles complied. As the talkies (modern movies) came into being, orchestras such as the one at the American became less popular and Niles was able to devote more time to the Engineer ensemble. In the early days, the band not only played at athletic events, but also gave concerts and played at dances. The group performed for the lacrosse, hockey, basketball and football teams, and would play not only the RPI school song, but also the alma mater of the opposing squad. In 1954, when the hockey team won the NCAA championship, the band took two buses and greeted them at the airport. Membership grew and through the years players broke off to form other musical groups. Niles, who was a big fan of the marches of Sousa, Goldman, and others, retired in 1973 after 50 years of service. Now 88 and living in Troy, he remains an avid fan of RPI sports."

1960s
Forward, March!
During the 1960s, RPI's band was a marching band, in addition to being a pep band. Of course, it didn't do any marching during hockey season, but it performed halftime marching routines at every home football game and participated in an occasional parade.

The marching band's halftime routine varied from game to game, but the ending was always the same. At the conclusion of the routine, the band would form an "R" and play the alma mater from that formation.

Fight Song
Hail, Dear Old Rensselaer was the fight song in the 1960s, and it consisted, as it does today, of an introductory fanfare, an eight line refrain, a four line interlude, and a repeat of the eight line refrain. However, there were some differences in how it was performed.

The fight song used to be played at a noticeably slower tempo than it is today. Basically, the marching band of the '60's played the fight song at the same speed as that at which they marched. They would have worn out pretty quickly if they had tried to march at the tempo at which the fight song is played today.

In the 1960s, the band would play the fanfare and the eight line refrain, as it does today, but would then sing the four line interlude, rather than playing it instrumentally. The only band members who played their instruments during that interlude were the drummers, who rattled through a drum solo during the line "Hear the rat-tat-tat of drums that beat." After singing "Hear that might shout of", the band members would bring their horns back up and play the refrain for the second and final time.

After Olin Niles' retirement, there was a period of a year or two when the interlude was dropped entirely, so that the fight song consisted of the opening fanfare followed by the refrain being played twice straight through. Eventually, the interlude was restored as an instrumental version, and it has remained that way since.

It was customary during that time, as it is today, for the band to play the fight song to salute the hockey team's arrival on the ice at the start of the period, or the football team's arrival on the field for the start of a half. While that was going on, it was also customary for all RPI fans to stand up and clap along in time with the music.

Hockey
RPI's hockey coach of the 1950s and early 1960s was Ned Harkness, after whom the field to the north of the Houston Field House is named.

Harkness always put competitive teams on the ice, but for some reason he always seemed to have a problem recruiting a full roster for his teams. RPI usually dressed four or five players fewer than the rules allowed, which led to fatigue problems for the players late in games. Harkness was known for doing anything he could to offset this disadvantage.

During Harkness' era, the third period would begin in the following manner. The band would salute RPI's return to the ice with the traditional playing of the fight song. As is customary at all hockey games everywhere, the teams would skate a couple laps around the ice to warm up and then gather around to tap their goalies on the pads for luck. Then those players who were not starting the period would go to their benches, while the starters moved toward center ice for the face-off. Finally, just before the referee got ready to drop the puck, the Field House P.A. announcer would intone, "And now, the (name of the opponents) alma mater," whereupon the band would play the visitor' alma mater, followed by our own.

Eventually, opposing coaches figured out that, while this practice had the symbolic effect of showing respect for the visitors, it also had the very practical effect of giving Harkness' chronically undermanned skaters several extra minutes of badly needed rest before starting the third period. After that, an NCAA rule was passed requiring that, if anybody's band wants to play an alma mater, it has to do so before the teams return to the ice.

1974-Present
Sometime before '74-'75, the Pep Band wore very heavy red wool jackets. By '74-'75, newer lighter- weight (but still heavy) red jackets were being used. Both styles of jackets had the RPI seal on the front breast pocket.

In addition to playing for football and hockey games, the RPI Pep Band played at men's basketball games (up through '79-'80). The basketball band was quite a bit smaller than the bands for football and hockey games. Hail was played when the team came out and if they won, the usual cheers were played during time-outs, and 5 special short cheers were arranged for when RPI made a basket.

Karger: Fixing formatting so 2012 info doesn't go with the overall description of what White-Out is

The White-Out game began during the 2004-2005 season under the name "White-Out Wednesday". It was a gimmick to draw a crowd for a rare mid-week game - if you wore white, you got into the game for free. Since then the White-Out game has become an annual event whose scheduling remains somewhat mysterious to the band. RPI has a 2-5 all-time record in White-Out games.

White-Out 2012
White-Out 2012 was originally scheduled for the home game against Princeton, but about half-way through the season all mentions of the game were removed from the RPI Athletics website. In the weeks leading to the game, however, game notes still referred to the game as White-Out. The game itself was not advertised as White-Out on game day and there was no gift. As such, no one is really sure if White-Out happened or not.
__NOTOC__

The St. Lawrence Saints have played in the ECAC since its formation in the 1961-1962 season. They are travel partners with Clarkson.

Where to Stay
In 2005, the band rented out a significant portion of a small resort named "The Stone Fence" in Ogdensburg/Morristown, including two nice town houses for the senior members. It also had a fine view of Canada across the river. These cabins proved to be very nice locations for Friday evening's obligatory road trip party. The resort was also incredibly inexpensive, as the middle of the winter is certainly not high season for a summer resort. The resort is a bit of a drive from Canton (about a half hour), but it is worth the trip.

In 2011 the band returned to the Stone Fence, and as the attendance on the trip was low due to RMA concerts, the entire band stayed in the town houses.

What to Do
Unfortunately, there's not really much to do in and around Canton. During the band's trip to the North Country in 2005, they spent the bulk of their Saturday at the St. Lawrence Centre, a mall in Massena which has a public, indoor skating rink in addition to a small assortment of stores and a food court.

In 2011 the women's game at SLU was a day game, and without time to go to Massena the band explored Canton. With a lot of time to kill and not much to do, some of the band opted to watch a movie at the local theater over wandering around town for a couple hours.

RPI's sports teams are known as the Engineers. The teams for men's and women's hockey, track and field, indoor track, cross country, football and tennis have always been known as the Engineers, while the rest of the varsity sports teams were known as the Red Hawks until 9/10/09 when the institute announced it would change all team names to the Engineers, reverting to the method used years ago by the school. The pep band will most commonly play at home men's and women's hockey games, as well as home football games. Every home men's hockey and football game is broadcasted by WRPI 91.5 FM, RPI's college radio station.
Free admission is given to all students wearing black, and members of the band are given black t-shirts which they wear over their regular rugby shirts. The team also wears special black jerseys for the game which are raffled off for charity afterwards. In 2010, Black Friday was replaced with Black Saturday. The Transit Trophy is a trophy awarded to the winner of the annual college football game between the RPI Engineers and the WPI Engineers since 1980. After the 1979 contest it was decided by the athletic directors of both schools to create a trophy for this long-standing rivalry. A transit was chosen since both schools are engineering schools. Currently the Transit Trophy resides in Worcester, but RPI leads the series 21-10-1.

Karger: Creating an article for Hockey Line

About
Owing to its origins as a military warehouse, most views in the Houston Field House were obstructed at least some angle between the rink and the seats due to large support columns that held up the Field House's roof. This led to the birth of what is known simply as "hockey line." Groups of people - usually members of various fraternities and sororities - take a place outside of the RPI Student Union building. Traditionally, the line began sometime during late July or early August prior to the beginning of Fall classes and continued until tickets went on sale in mid-September. People in line are allowed to buy up to eight tickets and can have people hold their place in line while they eat or go to class. Students set up beds, couches, television sets, and, more recently, computers and video games to pass the time as someone occupies each place in line on a 24 hour basis.

Following the Engineers' 1985 national championship victory, the Epsilon Iota chapter of the Psi Upsilon fraternity set a hockey line record by beginning the line on the very next day - March 31, 1985 - and continuing the line through the summer until tickets went on sale on September 25, 1985 which beat the previous record of 33 days with 178 days. (Excerpts from Hockey Line on Wikipedia.)

In 2011, Hockey Line was changed to add a march of the participants from the Union to the Field House, where in addition to the sale of season tickets there was a free skate and ice cream and pizza served by the men's and women's hockey teams.

The Uncle Sam Day Parade is a parade held every year in Lansingburgh (north Troy) on or around Uncle Sam's birthday (mid-September). The band has performed in every Uncle Sam Day Parade since 2005 (except for 2007, which was rained out).
__NOTOC__
History
*2005: Manager AJ Macey, himself a Troy native, arranged for the band to march in the Uncle Sam Day Parade for the first time in recent memory this year. The idea was met with some resistance initially, almost entirely because of the marching issue. However, after a short rehearsal and 15 minutes of marching practice, the band set out to "march" on what ended up being a particularly hot day. The setlist was just Twist and Shout, Final Countdown, and Handjive, and the band won first place in the Adult Division playing Final Countdown for the grandstand.
*2006:
*2007:
*2008: The setlist included Hogan's Heroes, Twist and Shout, Louie Louie, Spirit in the Sky, and Hail.
*2009: The setlist was Hogan's Heroes, Magnificent Seven, Final Countdown, Watermelon Man, and Hail, with an occasional short cheer (Chris Sommers, Night Train, and Islanders). Also, a sousaphone got urinated on by a small dog while the dog's owner was talking to a friend.
*2010:
*2011: The band played 25 or 6 to 4, Watermelon Man, YMCA, Sweet Caroline, and Hail. Handjive, Hey Baby, and a few cheers were also played when the band got bored. During Sweet Caroline the truck driving behind the band honked the horn along with the song in a few spots.
Black Friday
Black Friday started during the 2003-2004 season to honor the passing of women's hockey coach Bill Cahill and equipment manager Tom Cavosie. This game now takes place on the first home ECAC Hockey game of the season. Free admission is given to all students wearing black, and members of the band are given black t-shirts which they wear over their regular rugby shirts. The team also wears special black jerseys for the game which are raffled off for charity afterwards. In 2010, Black Friday was replaced with Black Saturday. RPI is 7-0-1 all-time in Black Friday games.
White-Out started during the 2004-2005 season under the name "White-Out Wednesday" as a gimmick to draw a crowd for a rare mid-week game.
Dutchman's Shoes Trophy Game
Every year, the Engineers play Union for possession of the Dutchman's Shoes Trophy. Dating back to 1886, it is the oldest college football rivalry in New York State. Since 1950 (when the trophy was introduced), Union leads the series 45-16. At the current date, the Shoes reside at RPI.

Transit Trophy Game
Every year, the Engineers play Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) for possession of the Transit Trophy. Since 1980 (when the trophy was introduced), RPI leads the series 21-9-1. At the current date, the Transit Trophy resides at WPI.

Shot Glass Trophy Game
From 1944 to 2005, the Engineers played the Coast Guard Academy for possession of the Shot Glass Trophy. Coast Guard leads the series 33-19-2, though they've only won 7 times since 1985. The series between the two schools ended following Coast Guard's departure from the Liberty League following the 2005 season. Since RPI won the most recent game of the series, the Shot Glass Trophy resides at RPI in the '87 gym.
Like for hockey, there are a few football games over the course of the season that carry special significance.

The team also wears special black jerseys for the game which are raffled off for charity afterwards. In 2010, Black Friday was replaced with Black Saturday. RPI is 7-0-1 all-time in Black Friday games.
Big Games
Like for hockey, there are a few football games over the course of the season that carry special significance.
