Weekend trip to SLU for Women's Hockey. Unlike the road trip in 2023, the student section was a non-issue (probably since it was a women's game). W 3-3 (Shootout). Weekend trip to Harvard for Men's Hockey. First trip to Harvard in recent memory. The band explored Boston during the day, splitting into groups to take over the city, but by the time the game started we were exhausted. There were a lot of RPI fans in attendance at the game, to the point where it felt like there were more RPI fans than Harvard fans.

Playoff trip during Spring Break. The band scraped up 15 members to travel the Friday of Spring Break to Harvard. Due to bus issues (since we thought the game was on Saturday), there was almost no bus, but we were able to get a Yellow School Bus™. Despite our small band due to Spring Break, the Harvard band was somehow smaller, despite their Spring Break being 2 weeks later. Two days letter, a fan wrote a letter to Marty saying how moved he was by the thoughtfulness of us going to play with the Harvard band during intermission, and how impressed he was was with how kind and mature we were. The Monday after this game, Coach Dave Smith was fired due to the miserable performance of the team, which let in 4 goals in 6 shots. L 2-6.
Natural Noise Intramurals is the generic term for all of the intramural sports that members of the band compete in.

Basketball
The band last fielded a D-League basketball intramural team in spring 2008. The team was first called "Ram Rods", but was shortly changed to Natural Noise.

Gym Hockey
The band has fielded at least one gym hockey team (when it is offered) from fall 2005 to the early 2010s. The team usually competes in D-League.

Ice Hockey
The band has fielded at least one ice hockey team every semester since fall 2007 to the early 2010s. During that time, we won a C-League championship in fall 2008, and were D-League runners-up in spring 2008. The team is called Natural Noise, but in the early 2000s the team was called "The Pucks".

Soccer
The band has been fielding at least one soccer team in both indoor and outdoor sections since spring 2023. We have fielded both D1 and D4 teams in this time, and won the indoor D4 championship in fall 2024.

Softball
The band last fielded a softball team around 2005.

Volleyball
The band has been fielding a volleyball team when offered since Fall 2023.

Wiffleball
The band competed in wiffleball in spring 2023, resulting in a "undefeated" championship. This was due to every game being either a forfeit victory if the other team did not show, or as a game not played if the refs/umpires/intramural officials did not show. This resulted in the only game "played" being the first game of the season, played with a tennis ball and a cricket bat (that the band technically lost), which did not officially count as no officials were present. Despite this, the band collected forfeits all the way to a championship and never (technically) lost a game of wiffleball.

Pub Trivia
While not a sport, the band has been known to occasionally have a team compete in the semester-long Pub Trivia at the Clubhouse Pub in the Union. The team won a championship in spring 2008, and was a runner-up in fall 2007 as "Platypota".

Blackout, formerly called Black Friday, started during the 2003-2004 season to honor the passing of women's hockey coach Bill Cahill and equipment manager Tom Cavosie. This game now takes place on the first home ECAC Hockey game of the season. Free admission is given to all students wearing black, and members of the band are given black t-shirts which they wear over their regular rugby shirts. The team also wears special black jerseys for the game which are raffled off for charity afterwards. In 2010, Black Friday was replaced with Black Saturday due to the home-and-home weekend with Union being the first ECAC weekend involving a home game. With the start of the 2018-19 season, this event was named Blackout. It is often considered the second biggest game of the year, behind Freakout.

Being the first home men's game, Blackout tends to be against Union College, with each year swapping between being held on Friday or Saturday.
Traditions
Songs
Because the game often falls right before Halloween, it is common for specific songs to be called by the conductor during the game. These songs are, but not limited to:
*033 - El Cumbanchero
*142 - Gimme Some Lovin'
*423 - Ghostbusters
*431 - Thriller
*479 - Paint It Black

Clothing
Any students wearing black is granted free admission to the game, so the band tends to follow suit with the custom. The managers however wear special Blackout rugbies during the game. These are older rugbies with a certain message directed to Union ironed onto the front side.

Blackout T-shirts
Every year for Blackout, the band is given a set of Blackout t-shirts by the Athletic Department. It has been tradition since the first Black Friday to wear the t-shirts over the band's usual rugby shirts to match the crowd which is also encouraged to wear black for the game. Starting in the 2014-2015 season, the band stopped receiving T-Shirts. As of the 2018-19 season, the band again gets Blackout t-shirts once again.

November 11, 2023: Football @ Union (Dutchman Shoes Trophy Game)
Day trip to Union College for Shoes (L 7-13). Largely uneventful game for the Engineers, however Ungorr Nassery had an interview that was featured in an article in the Daily Gazette.

November 3, 2023: Men's Hockey @ Union (Blackout weekend away game)
Day Trip to Union College for the away Blackout game (W 8-6). A wild, high-scoring game from start to finish, as the Engineers opened the scoring 48 seconds in. Despite the offensive outburst from both teams, the Engineers maintained the lead for the rest of the game, though Union brought it to a one-goal lead multiple times (partially due to going 3 for 4 on the power play). Union scored to bring the game to 7-6 Engineers with 8:30 left, but the Engineers held on and got an empty-netter to win the game 8-6. The band also participated in a mega-band with the Union Pep Band in the second intermission. Also, the band was told off for holding up the Clarkson Sucks signs while on the video board.

November 30-December 1, 2023: Women's Hockey @ Princeton University and Quinnipiac University
Overnight trip to Princeton University and Quinnipiac University to support the women's hockey team, losing both games 0-6 and 2-4. The most notable event from this trip was the band being misled by DirectTravel (the intermediary company required by the Union for reserving hotels), so the complementary breakfast promised to the band was not provided (becoming the subject of many angry emails between the managers, DirectTravel, and our contacts in the Union).

February 2, 2024: Men's Hockey @ Brown University

March 9, 2024: Men's Hockey @ Clarkson University
Day trip to Clarkson University to support the men's hockey team for the first round of ECAC playoffs. The Engineers pulled out a stunning upset win, coming in as a 12 seed to upset the 5 seed at their arena. RPI built up a 3-0 lead up through halfway into the third period, then conceded two goals in the next 8 minutes. However, the Engineers held firm to win 3-2 and advance to the second round of the ECAC playoffs.

March 15-16, 2024: Men's Hockey ECAC Playoffs Round 2 @ Quinnipiac University
Overnight trip to Quinnipiac University to support the men's hockey team in the second round of the ECAC playoffs. Unfortunately, the Engineer's Cinderella run ended with a 1-5, 2-5 sweep from Quinnipiac, though the second game featured a Sutter Muzzatti short-handed goal for the Engineers and 2 Quinnipiac empty-net goals at the end of the game so it was closer than the score line shows. The band performed a mega-band with the Quinnipiac Pep Band at both games and generally had good banter with them throughout the series despite the game scores.
*March 15-16, 2024: Men's Hockey ECAC Playoffs Round 2 @ Quinnipiac University
Overnight trip to Quinnipiac University to support the men's hockey team in the second round of the ECAC playoffs. Unfortunately, the Engineer's Cinderella run ended with a 1-5, 2-5 sweep from Quinnipiac, though the second game featured a Sutter Muzzatti short-handed goal for the Engineers and 2 Quinnipiac empty-net goals at the end of the game so it was closer than the score line shows. The band performed a mega-band with the Quinnipiac Pep Band at both games and generally had good banter with them throughout the series despite the game scores.

*November 30-December 1, 2023: Women's Hockey @ Princeton University and Quinnipiac University
Overnight trip to Quinnipiac (Lost 1-4) and Princeton (Lost 5-6 OT). At Quinnipiac people dressed as teletubbies and threw chicken nuggets at the clarinet section during the few songs we actually got to play. We almost won at Princeton, but then Jared Wilson got a penalty in OT.
Overnight trip to Clarkson for Round 1 of Men's Hockey Playoffs (Lost 3-7 and Lost 2-4). Lots of board games were played and the cold was braved. The Clarkson Pep Band also gave us free sandwiches at the end of the second game and asked us if we could never play Sweet Caroline in their rink again (for reasons).

Overnight trip to SLU and Clarkson. Were forced to stay all the way in Watertown because there were no hotels in the area due to many SLU events happening that weekend. At Appleton Arena, the band had seats next to SLU's student section. They gave vulgar remarks and middle fingers every time we played. At one point, a student came over to the band and hit the bass drum. Security quickly removed them and stayed by the band for the remainder of the game. Before Saturday's game in Potsdam, we met up with Clarkson's pep band and played soccer together. Clarkson's fans were much better than SLU's during the game and we had fun with the Superband.
The women's team won 2-1, having also beat Union the night before in Troy. The men's team lost 6-0 (same score as Blackout weekend).
Overnight trip to Cornell and Colgate. Due to the extremely cold wind chill (and loss), the band did not to clap for the team following Friday night's game. On Saturday, the band spent the afternoon at the Shops at Ithaca mall, which included "The Entertainment Zone" (slightly sketch area with pool tables and a jukebox) and a decent Mexican restaurant. Before the game, we got together with Colgate's band at a gymnasium on campus. The team defeated Colgate 2-1 that night, earning their first win after losing twelve straight away games to start the season. RPI was part of a Superband in both games. Ungorr Nassery and Coach Dave Smith made their friendship official when the band was clapping for the team after the Colgate game.

February 17, 2023: Men's Hockey @ Dartmouth
November 4-5, 2022: Men's Hockey @ St. Lawrence and Clarkson
Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Freakout is. You must experience it for yourself.

Actually Useful Information
Freakout is probably best described as being analogous to Homecoming. Only instead of being in the Fall, it's in late January or early February, and instead of a football game, it's a men's hockey game. It is traditional for a large number of alumni to return for Freakout and for a gift to be given to every person in attendance by the Athletic Department. For a further list of traditions associated with Freakout, see Freakout Traditions.
The teams for men's and women's hockey, track and field, indoor track, cross country, football and tennis have always been known as the Engineers, while the rest of the varsity sports teams were known as the Red Hawks until 9/10/09 when the institute announced it would change all team names to the Engineers, reverting to the method used years ago by the school.
Blackout
Blackout, formerly Black Friday, started during the 2003-2004 season to honor the passing of women's hockey coach Bill Cahill and equipment manager Tom Cavosie. This game now takes place on the first home ECAC Hockey game of the season. Free admission is given to all students wearing black, and members of the band are given black t-shirts which they wear over their regular rugby shirts. The team also wears special black jerseys for the game which are raffled off for charity afterwards. In 2010, Black Friday was replaced with Black Saturday. RPI is 7-2-1 all-time in Black Friday games.

Mayor's Cup
The Mayor's Cup is an annual matchup between RPI and Union in January. It consists of a women's game and men's game held in the MVP Arena in Albany, NY. It often has a large turnout, given RPI and Union are both local in the area, making it one of the largest venues the band plays for.

White-Out
White-Out started during the 2004-2005 season under the name "White-Out Wednesday" as a gimmick to draw a crowd for a rare mid-week game. The White-Out game has since become an annual event whose scheduling remains somewhat mysterious to the band. RPI is 2-4 (or 2-5) all-time in White-Out games.

Recent Opponents and Results
2011-2012: White-Out may or may not have been played this year. See Senior Night below for what might have been White-Out.<br>
Big Games
Like for hockey, there are a few football games over the course of the season that carry special significance.

Dutchman's Shoes Trophy Game
Every year, the Engineers play Union for possession of the Dutchman's Shoes Trophy. Dating back to 1886, it is the oldest college football rivalry in New York State. Since 1950 (when the trophy was introduced), Union leads the series 46-16. At the current date, the Shoes reside at Union.

Transit Trophy Game
Every year, the Engineers play Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) for possession of the Transit Trophy. Since 1980 (when the trophy was introduced), RPI leads the series 21-10-1. At the current date, the Transit Trophy resides at RPI.

Shot Glass Trophy Game
From 1944 to 2005, the Engineers played the Coast Guard Academy for possession of the Shot Glass Trophy. Coast Guard leads the series 33-19-2, though they've only won 7 times since 1985. The series between the two schools ended following Coast Guard's departure from the Liberty League following the 2005 season. Since RPI won the most recent game of the series, the Shot Glass Trophy resides at RPI in the '87 gym.

The Podium is the box on which the conductor stands at hockey games so that the people in the back rows of the band can see him or her conducting. The first podium was made entirely of wood, painted white, with the pep band logo on top and was used into the 2004-2005 hockey season. During that season, the Alumni Association constructed a new podium made of a steel frame with wooden panels on the four sides and on top. This was given to the band as a gift by at Freakout 2005.

The wooden panels were intended to be the start of a new tradition for the band. On the "first" panel (the one facing the ice) was painted the names of the band's previous conductors, along with the year(s) of their tenure. This list continued onto the panel facing the "town" side of the rink. Opposite that (the side facing the "student" side of the building) appeared the words to Hail! Finally, the side facing the band included a message from the band alumni. As the years progressed, each conductor's name would be painted onto a panel. with panels being replaced as additional space was needed (a la the rings on the Stanley Cup).

In the mix of construction over the summer of 2008, the Podium was "thrown away" by one of the several contractors. The responsible party was never identified. This led to the construction of a third podium, which was used until the stage was removed a couple of years later. This podium is now used at rehearsals.

Both the second and third podiums were designed to withstand a great leaping weight so as to not collapse when conductors or others became boisterous. A "hidden" feature was also included to support creativity during one of the band's Freakout traditions.

Day trip to Union College for Shoes (W 19-17). The weather was chilly and rainy, with band members huddling under ponchos to keep themselves and their instruments dry. See here for a breakdown of the crazy final five minutes of the game. RPI's win granted the team the Liberty League title and an appearance in the NCAA playoffs.

Day trip to Endicott College in Beverly, MA (W 20-14). When the band's bus was arriving at Endicott, the driver hit a metal sign and kept driving, which tore up the side of the bus. A public safety officer spoke to us and our driver simply lit his pipe.

December 4, 2021: Football @ North Central (NCAA Playoffs Quarterfinal)

Overnight trip to North Central College in Naperville, IL (L 6-55). The band traveled by bus (13 hours one way) and stayed at a hotel Friday night. Per Midwestern tradition, members went to a nearby Culver's for dinner (many cheese curds and custards were had). The game itself was a blowout, but the band had a fun trip regardless.

We will all have cribbed our way<br>
We will all get drunk down at the Ruck<br>
Just to celebrate the day<br>
And when Marty hands the sheepskins out<br>
We will all raise up a cheer (FINE BEER!)<br>
For we’re going out of college<br>
And "TO HELL with Rensselaer!"<br>

Use
Much like Let's Give a Cheer, this song is sung by members of the band while packing up instruments after events at which the band plays.

History
The lyrics to this song have been updated several times over the course of time to reflect changes in the President of the Institute and in what bars are popular in Troy.

Other notable alterations:<br>
*The replacement of "HERE HERE!" in the second stanza with "FINE BEER!".
*The occasional replacement of "TO HELL with" with "HOORAY for" in the last line, of the situation warrants it.
*Modernizing and politically correcting certain lines, notably "fair virgins".

Here is one of the old versions ():

From the glorious heights of Prospect Park<br>
To the mud flats of Cohoes,<br>
We will study hard, get drunk weekends,<br>
And the rest Lord only knows,<br>
We will drink to Troy’s fair virgins,<br>
We will drink to Troy’s good beer,<br>
And without a doubt someone will shout-<br>
“Let us drink to Rensselaer.”<br>
<br>
And when after four or five long years,<br>
We have finally cribbed our way,<br>
We will all get drunk down at the port,<br>
Just to celebrate the day,<br>
And when Houston hands the sheepskins out<br>
We will all let out a cheer-<br>
For we’re going out of college<br>
And "To Hell with Rensselaer!"<br>

The Toll Booth Song is sung by the members of the band on all road trips whenever the bus passes through a toll booth. A line is added to the song during the first road trip of the Spring semester each year to commemorate that year's conductor. =Past Managers=
The current system of two associate and two executive managers has not always been in place. Before the Spring 2019 semester, the band had only two concurrently elected managers. One election was held per year and there was an understood one-year commitment that the electee would serve. A manager will henceforth serve one semester as associate manager, and one semester as executive manager. Before the mid-1980s, the band had a senior band manager and an assistant band manager. One election was held per year and there was an understood two-year commitment that the electee would serve the first year as assistant manager and the second year as senior manager.

Below, starting in S2019, the two executive managers served with and mentored two associate managers. The records below reflect the total two semester term.
*S2019-F2019 Leighann Kemp, Cassie Smith

About this cheer
Prince Ali is from the 1992 Disney animated film Aladdin. This song can be played following Billberger Salute or as its own cheer.

Instrumentation requirements
*Trumpets

History
Typically this was played by at least a Trumpet, Mellophone, and a Tenor Sax following Billberger Salute.

Following most of the individual parts being lost, Prince Ali was added to the cheer sheets in 2016. The band resisted change and frequently vetoed Prince Ali if it was called on its own.

In 2023, as part of a long-awaited cheer sheet update, Prince Ali was reborn as 'Prince John C' in honor of the arranger John Caezza.
