I'm Natalie Semczuk STS/EMAC '10. I play flute in the band and am one of the current managers (07-08). You can get in contact with me by emailing me at semczukn AT gmail DOT com, on AIM (itmightbeNATALIE), or here on my user talk page. I'm just getting to learn how to use this thing, so sorry for any messy code/etc!

About Natalie and Other Facts
*Instruments: Flute in band related groups, Violin in orchestra and chamber ensemble
*Also play: Piccolo
*Played Saxophone at one or two games last year
*EMAC Portfolio
Goals for 2008-2009 season
*(Summer) Put up new photos/scans on closet doors in 326
*(Summer) Create some kind of Pep Band Archive for photos, Freakout gifts, etc. (Does something like this already exist?)
*Break out the saxophone more often
*Make a girly manager's jacket - I received a short sleeved RPI red blazer for Christmas one year and it would be perfect for this.

Favorite Songs
*El Cumbanchero - who doesn't like runs in thirds?? Oh wait....apparently everyone who has them but me. :(
*Joshua - BEST SONG EVER.
*Basin Street Blues - the beginning of this is one of the coolest trumpet parts to listen to. I also really like the tempo change.
*Children of Sanchez - duh!
*Brown Derby Jump - the bari solo is awesome! The flute part is really fun to play.
*Paranoid - Excellent!
*You Can Call Me Al - Flute solo!!
*Rebel Yell - I love this song, I'd never heard it until we got the music.
*Spirit in the Sky - this is another really fun flute song (bends!)!
*Whatever number Crazy Train is!

Least Favorite Songs
*Gospel John - booooooring. It'd be fun to play the second half as written a few times at games to change things up.
*Gonna Fly Now - uugh. Weird flute part, not enough actual notes to be interesting.
*Eye Of The Tiger - same as above, but less weird, more whole notes.
*I'm A Believer - LEAST FAVORITE SONG EVER! Too repetitive for me, among other complaints.
*Hang on Sloopy - such a boring song to play.

Songs I'd Like To Play Again Sometime Soon
*Rock Around the Clock - just saying. Too soon?

I disagree with the piece being called out as the "most" challenging piece in the library. I'll admit that the time signature and tempo changes add a difficulty which we usually don't work with, but the parts are relatively straightforward beyond that.
*St. James and Basin St. both call out abrupt tempo and dynamic changes.
*Children of Sanchez (when played properly) and El Cumbanchero have noticably more demanding percussion parts - since we're not running any of the field elements on this piece, usually.
*The NFL on Fox cheer has more difficult entrances to grab onto
*The cheer versions of Play That Funky Music and Back in Black are more exposed
*The Trumpet Cheers definitely require even greater strength in the trumpet section
*Jump, Live and Let Die, Jungle Boogie, and certainly several others have harder rhythms to read
*Duel of the Fates requires more focus from the front line
*You Can Call Me Al calls for greater dynamic control as the solo there is on Flute/Picc
*And, though we may not always recognize it, Proud Mary and 55 both hold the tempo to a higher standard - if you slouch you lose the excitement, which means you need an experienced and rehearsed percussion section
*Lastly, Classical Gas takes the cake on meter changes - actually, it takes the whole bakery and the deli next door just for good measure. I'm working on it in my spare time.
:*I concede that the rapid eighths in the 12/8 section are very difficult because so much of the band is in unison and it'll sound like soup if you're not lined up vertically.
:*And I concede that there are a few call-and-response spots which will need more rehearsal than other sections, but not much more than Star Wars, really.
I agree that it's a difficult piece, but I disagree with saying it's the "most" difficult piece in the library.
*Last note: Don't worry about typing the parts. I emptied the last of my old boxes and found a copy of the score. No parts, but I still have Finale and can type up the parts. Might not be until January or so by the time it gets to y'all, but I figure that'll save someone the hassle and maybe save the band a little money.TrekMuse 15:16, November 12, 2008 (UTC)

----
First of all regarding typing the parts I wouldn't bother with it (I already have half of it inputted into Sibelius).

As for this not being one of the most challeging songs in the library, you have to be kidding yourself. It has a very exposed beginning with time changes, a trumpet solo which most trumpets would have trouble playing cleanly, interweaving woodwind parts, a difficult percussion part, 3 minute length, 4 abrupt tempo changes.... in short, it requires a high level of musicianship from the entire band, and lots of practice. The song examples you gave occasionally go beyond the demand required for this song, but they only ever go beyond on one facet. This song is demanding for everyone in the band in every way. In fact, I'd say the only song you listed that is on par with this song in terms of difficulty is Classical Gas, and that's mostly for the toll on the conductor. While Summon the Heroes might not be the most difficult song in the library (though I believe it is), it is definitely one of the most difficult. Trick trickster 04:23, November 13, 2008 (UTC)

----
I just want to jump in here and say that You Can Call Me Al definitely isn't as challenging for dynamic control, as it's a tuba/flute(/picc) solo and the remainder of the band rests during that. At least, we haven't had a problem with that as long as I've been in the band. Is it really necessary to pick apart every song over this? Natural Noise Black is one of the two intramural ice hockey teams that split from the original Natural Noise team in spring 2008 due to an abundance of interest (and calls for more playing time by the players). The black team is the "A" team for ice hockey, set up to make a run at the C League championship. In one season so far Natural Noise Black has amassed a regular season record of 4-1-1 with 24 goals for and 5 goals allowed, and a playoff record of 1-1.

Cass Park has an ice rink that's within a convenient bus ride from the mall. A bowling alley was also located close to the mall and the ice rink. Dropping off members at the mall, taking a group of people over to the bowling alley, then back to the mall and to the ice rink seemed to work well.
I just edited the Children of Sanchez page, and realized that I have information on what to practice for the sax part, but there really isn't a good place to put it on the current song page template. Regarding Freeze Frame, you might want to contact Steele about it. When I put together Active Set 2003-2006, I started by pulling parts from the file cabinet with the originals. Mike Brown didn't explain until later that I shouldn't've gotten the parts from there, but instead from a safeguard he set up (when he overhauled the library) for librarian use. The only effect of my having gone to the drawers was (aside from generating a ton of extra work for myself) that there are/were two printings of Freeze Frame. As I understand it, Steele wrote the first draft to the recording - and as such it has all the intricate harmonies and background rhythms. Then some parts were re-written to make the tune more useable (rather than needing every part to be covered and balanced). By the time we found this, Mike Brown and I had already re-set that librarian's safeguard and the versions were mixed together (he didn't recall at the time that the first version was still in the drawers). You may save yourself some noticable time and effort by contacting Steele (through the Alumni group?) to see if he still has the original parts. :Most of the work's already done. Once one part is entered into Sibelius, for the most part the rest is cut and paste. All I'm missing right now is Trumpet 2/3, which is going to be collapsed into one part (as they all will eventually be, no doubt). Most of the work involved from here on out is going to be cleaning up the rhythms cosmetically to make them easier to read, putting in rehearsal markings, changing the instrumentation around to make more sense, and redoing the percussion parts (including adding a glock, tenor drum, and aux. perc. part). I'm also toying around with changing the ending, but I'll finish everything else before I try anything with that. First off, I hope I clicked the right button and this works...but anyway. So for Natural Noise intramurals, I'm thinking a page describing the teams as the main Natural Noise Intramurals page (how long they've been around, who started them, that kind of thing - general stuff), with links to the different sports we have/have had teams for. On those individual sport pages, a quick description or overview of the seasons, and then list the past team captains and/or any notable things about the season (rosters would be cool too). I guess for hockey there'd be a description of the team before we spilt into two, and then a link to Red and Black from there, perhaps. Thoughts? You can get in contact with me by emailing me at semczukn AT gmail DOT com, on AIM (itmightbeNATALIE), or here on my user talk page. I'm just getting to learn how to use this thing, so sorry for any messy code/etc!
About Natalie and Other Facts
*Instruments: Flute in band related groups, Violin in orchestra and chamber ensemble
*Occassionally played: Piccolo
*Played Saxophone at one or two games this year
*EMAC Portfolio

*You Can Call Me Al - Flute solo!!
*Rebel Yell - I love this song, I'd never heard it until we got the music this year.
*Spirit In The Sky - this is another really fun flute song (bends!)!

Notes
*This recording has yet to be made and will be posted shortly
*In the program for this concert, the information for performers and songs is fabricated by RMA Publicity Coordinator Jenny Blanchard. Since the band was busy (as always) this spring with a number of events and the officer changeovers, an arbitrary deadline was missed for the band to send in a set list and performers for the concert. This led to the fabrication of the band's information in lieu of a message of "information for this group was unavailable at the time of printing." Needless to say, this was an extremely unprofessional act. At that point the band hadn't even had a rehearsal for the concert let alone figured everything out for it. The roster is composed of songs from the active setlist playing the different instruments of a kazoo choir, with a set list of made-up songs. A new version of the program was printed with the correct information.

*Occassionally played: Piccolo
*Played Saxophone at one or two games this year
*EMAC Portfolio
Goals for 2008-2009 season

*You Can Call Me Al - Flute solo!!
*Rebel Yell - I love this song, I'd never heard it until we got the music this year.
*Spirit In The Sky - this is another really fun flute song (bends!)!

Too soon?

On Notice
*Public Safety
*The guy from Cornell
*Your mom.

*Brown Derby Jump - the bari solo is awesome! The flute part is really fun to play.
*You Can Call Me Al - Flute solo!!
*Rebel Yell - I love this song, I'd never heard it until we got the music this year.
*Spirit In The Sky - this is another really fun flute song (bends!)!

Too soon?
