I disagree with the piece being called out as the "most" challenging piece in the library. I'll admit that the time signature and tempo changes add a difficulty which we usually don't work with, but the parts are relatively straightforward beyond that.
*St. James and Basin St. both call out abrupt tempo and dynamic changes.
*Children of Sanchez (when played properly) and El Cumbanchero have noticably more demanding percussion parts - since we're not running any of the field elements on this piece, usually.
*The NFL on Fox cheer has more difficult entrances to grab onto
*The cheer versions of Play That Funky Music and Back in Black are more exposed
*The Trumpet Cheers definitely require even greater strength in the trumpet section
*Jump, Live and Let Die, Jungle Boogie, and certainly several others have harder rhythms to read
*Duel of the Fates requires more focus from the front line
*You Can Call Me Al calls for greater dynamic control as the solo there is on Flute/Picc
*And, though we may not always recognize it, Proud Mary and 55 both hold the tempo to a higher standard - if you slouch you lose the excitement, which means you need an experienced and rehearsed percussion section
*Lastly, Classical Gas takes the cake on meter changes - actually, it takes the whole bakery and the deli next door just for good measure. I'm working on it in my spare time.
:*I concede that the rapid eighths in the 12/8 section are very difficult because so much of the band is in unison and it'll sound like soup if you're not lined up vertically.
:*And I concede that there are a few call-and-response spots which will need more rehearsal than other sections, but not much more than Star Wars, really.
I agree that it's a difficult piece, but I disagree with saying it's the "most" difficult piece in the library.
*Last note: Don't worry about typing the parts. I emptied the last of my old boxes and found a copy of the score. No parts, but I still have Finale and can type up the parts. Might not be until January or so by the time it gets to y'all, but I figure that'll save someone the hassle and maybe save the band a little money.TrekMuse 15:16, November 12, 2008 (UTC)

stub
About this song
"Summon the Heroes" was written by John Williams for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. This version of the song is arranged by Paul Lavender with percussion by Barry Reese.

Instrumentation requirements
"Summon the Heroes" is among the more challenging pieces in the band's library, as it is very faithful to the original arrangement. Due to its fame/popularity, and the fact that it is a more symphonic piece, it should be rehearsed more thoroughly before a performance. A strong trumpet soloist is listed in the score, but the firsts can run the part as a soli (just tune first). A strong trumpet section in general is recommended since the song is, primarily, a fanfare. In addition, there are parts for xylophone, sleigh bells, and an optional timpani part that is not included in the score (and therefore probably doesn't exist in the library) - showing that the arrangement was intended for a field routine.

Roadmap
There are no repeats or codas in this song. The band plays straight through as written.

History
This song was purchased by Charlie Scaringello during his conductorship in the 2003-2004 season. It was given the number 434 at the time, but since no original copies exist save for a score, it was forgetten about soon afterward and 434 was given to "Fever" from Dr. Mario instead in 2006. Around the same time, the score to Summon the Heroes was rediscovered, and it currently exists without a number and only as a score.
Unless the band reads the song differently than written, the roadmap is pretty straightforward. There are two repeats (both with 1st/2nd endings), and a DS back to measure 5, going to the coda after measure 24.
No, I think James is right. On my copy I have a note that there was a cut in the middle to make it a little shorter, but I don't have the specific measures marked. Perhaps someone from just before our time might have it? TrekMuse 17:19, June 26, 2008 (UTC)
IIRC, just working with the score won't work because this one only has a very condensed score (possibly even just a piano reduction) and I would need to see all the parts. I really like the song, I think if the tempo is turned up a bit it can be peppy enough to work (and certainly works as it stands for a Pep Band in Concert type venue), and I would like to at least see if there is a way to improve the arrangement. The thing is, with the way it is currently written, the rhythms are actually very true to Mason Williams' intent. However, I agree, it is a bear to read. I think that much of the song can be reduced to Common Time, with accents to carry what is currently written as several other signatures. At the same time, send the score for Summon the Heroes and I'll start typing that up as well. Contact me by e-mail and I'll send shipping info. Thank you. I may be wrong, but if I remember conductor history correctly, the year after A. Olin Niles retired, the position of conductor was handled more ad hoc than anything else. There were a few people who led games repeatedly, but noone was actually appointed. It was supposed to be some sort of trial year for the band: if they could perform well without a paid conductor for a whole season, the Union (and/or the Arts department?) would let them continue as such. Might be good to ask someone closer to that era, like Prof. Derby, to verify. TrekMuse 08:52, February 11, 2008 (EST)

While it's a neat little tradition, and certainly a ton of fun, Van Surfing is "officially" frowned upon by the 'tute and the Union. With that in mind, perhaps this page should cease to exist, as it may backfire on the band much the way that dangerous Youtube or MySpace vidoes have done to people in the past. I know that they typically don't do anything about it - I mean, heck, we loaded something like 8 or 10 people into the van when we were packing up from Accepted Students day in 2003 and we were in plain sight right next to Public Safety and they said nothing. Call me old, but even with that event in mind, I'm wary of making such a permanent and public declaration of the tradition - and even more so of putting up photographic evidence. Curious, though, what has made it to the AKA list. There was a movement for some time to actually make it Rensselaer University. I think it was in the transition time into Dr. Jackson's tenure. It was eventually abandoned (or so the story goes). Of course, attempting this would involve massive renovations to Sage, West, and Carnegie; approx. 3 new buildings; a massive staffing surge coupled with departmental and infrastructure overhauls; and magically usurping the long-standing perception that the School of H&SS is pretty much just for electives, minors, second majors, EMAC, EArts, STSS, and random graduate students. Oh, and they'd need to build a state-of-the-art performance center ... hey wait a minute, aren't they in the middle of... =About the song=
Arranged by John Higgins.

Little is known about the origins of this song other than that CBS once used it as opening music for their coverage of a golf tournament in the 1980's. A number of other bands include this in their repertoire (eg: Brown) but noone seems to be able to find an "original" recording.

Instrumentation requirements
The opening downbeat is a bass drum hit with brass on the upbeat. They have to be watching very closely at the beginning.

Roadmap
With the loud and sudden opening to the song, (and its fanfare-like style - as opposed to rock or jazz) the song has the capacity to be more dramatic with a "silent" count-off. Charlie Scaringello started this technique (in recent memory, anyways) and typically did this by counting off two measures. For the first measure call out "1 ... 2" on beats 1 and 3 (like usual), then call out beats 1, 2, and 3 of the second measure decreasing in volume very quickly such that 3 can only be heard by the band and beat 4 is silent. Make sure you conduct all 8 beats and that the band is paying attention - otherwise you get a subdued cachophony.
::IIRC, talk at the time was that the "boom sticks" didn't violate the rule because they tried to find a loophole. Each fan was only given one, thus creating the argument that one "boom stick" can only create the equivalent sound of one hand clapping. This is, of course, feeble at best. Regarding Freeze Frame, you might want to contact Steele about it. When I put together Active Set 2003-2006, I started by pulling parts from the file cabinet with the originals. Mike Brown didn't explain until later that I shouldn't've gotten the parts from there, but instead from a safeguard he set up (when he overhauled the library) for librarian use. The only effect of my having gone to the drawers was (aside from generating a ton of extra work for myself) that there are/were two printings of Freeze Frame. As I understand it, Steele wrote the first draft to the recording - and as such it has all the intricate harmonies and background rhythms. Then some parts were re-written to make the tune more useable (rather than needing every part to be covered and balanced). By the time we found this, Mike Brown and I had already re-set that librarian's safeguard and the versions were mixed together (he didn't recall at the time that the first version was still in the drawers). You may save yourself some noticable time and effort by contacting Steele (through the Alumni group?) to see if he still has the original parts. Note: This cheer is often blamed for our opponent gaining possession of the puck and dumping it out of their defensive zone by the more supersitious members of the band. As such, those members attempt to squash it when it is started, usually to no avail.

Like most any team, on some occassions, the Engineers have had a tendency to maintain puck posession but keep waiting for better angles/opportunities and losing puck possesion more often than actually shooting.

TrekMuse: Largely Roadmap info. Still having a browser issue, though.

About the song
Written by Jerry Goldsmith.
Arranged by John Tatgenhorst.

Instrumentation requirements
Good, steady percussion. Sharp snares on the snare drums - you don't want a ton of ring.

Some strength in the flute section can make a nice addition here.

Trumpets who know how and when not to blast.

Roadmap
Standard march tempo and beat.

Conduct/play/think the 6/8 in a brisk 2 and you'll be able to maintain a constant tempo. It'll just feel faster at the 2/4 because there's only 2 eighth notes per beat instead of 3. Don't get tricked into speeding up - it's still a march and armies don't run while on parade.

Leave plenty in reserve when hitting the mf at A. While the theme changes by way of voices, that easily gets lost in a place like the Fieldhouse. Use dynamics to your advantage to keep it interesting.

When approaching C, the preceeding two measures are poorly arranged. For most parts: Take the 3 notes in measure C-2 and make them an even triplet. Take the first 3 notes of C-1 and do the same. Ignore the 4th note of C-1. This is much closer to the intended rhythm of the piece.

The repeat is long and leads all the way back to A, through to the end of the piece, but given the variety of C, it's usually rather nice. If you do opt for the whole piece, make sure not to kill your volume too soon. You'll need to make D a slight touch louder the second time around.

The option for an abridged ending would be to take the repeat and end at the downbeat of C, but playing the first beat of A as a short quarter note. It sounds tricky, but it's really not. Maintain the triplets in the two measures leading up to C for this ending.

History
MALINSKI NO Trick trickster 18:01, September 15, 2007 (EDT)
*No to what???!!Malinski 01:41, September 16, 2007 (EDT)
**I might be alone in thinking this, but I'm of the opinion that we don't need an article for each game that we play at (and that it doesn't even bear mentioning on the season article), and that we certainly don't need to keep track of every song that we ever play for the wiki. Trick trickster 11:44, September 16, 2007 (EDT)
**There's interesting data that could be gathered from keeping this kind of information (most/least played songs/sheers, number of times cheers are recycled in a single game), but I'm not sure to what end it would be used. If a song is played too much, the band should notice and mention it to the conductor. You're effectively using the wiki as a tally board, which is ok, but as Chris says, it shouldn't be linked from the season pages; they have enough on them as it is. If you really feel compelled to do this, you could link to them through your user page or something. HLPXX 14:00, September 16, 2007 (EDT)
**I'll link them off my user page - I'll fix it as soon as I get a chance. Malinski 20:03, September 16, 2007 (EDT)
***Along these lines, I've been kicking around ideas for content on the Freakout pages. I thought it might be nice to have a list of guest/ex-conductors, and what they conducted. I think a full breakdown of each song might be a bit much. HLPXX 21:50, September 16, 2007 (EDT)
**I'm not even all that sure how useful the data would be since what songs are played on any given night is dependent things other than just the whim of the conductor such as instrumentation. However, if Malinski really wants to compile it, who am I to say no? Bickfa 22:38, September 16, 2007 (EDT)
**I can see information on each game being useful in some ways. Not any ways that we'll see right off the bat, of course, but at least somewhere it might be kinda nice to keep a record of things like what was played (song-wise, there's too much traffic to bother tracking cheers IMO), and major things that happen to the band (eg: the football playoff game in Nov. 2003 when we were moved to behind the end zone b/c the Athletics Department wanted more room in the main grandstand). Sometimes, yes, song selection is based more on available personnel than what the conductor and/or band would like to play. But a list may still be helpful to help point out or avoid ruts and the like. However, there may be a danger to making a permanent, publically available list of all pieces the Pep Band performs at every game. Given how murky the relatively new field of Intellectual Property Law is, added to how touchy the music industry as a whole gets about their IP, the Pep Band (hell, all Pep Bands) could be construed as not properly following licensing. It's a touchy field and horribly nebulous. Basically, precident states (and industry upholds), if you're performing (or playing a recording of) something publically, you're required to pay a performance royalty to ... someone. The recording company, the band, the copyright holder, ASCAP, - I'm honestly not 100% certain how that works technically. Granted, I don't think they would care or bother as we're not turning a profit, and the fact that they'd pretty much be setting a legal precedent against every high school and college marching band, and every community band. But, by posting such a set list publically, we'd certainly have put the ammunition in their guns for them should they direct their attention our way. Perhaps put it behind a password? Again, it might make for an interesting, though probably incomplete, database. And the wiki isn't such a bad place for it. But I don't know if positing it for all the world to see is a great idea. TrekMuse 12:30, September 17, 2007 (EDT)

I agree that 208 is a great tune. It sounded good in Blast!. I thought we did a reasonably good job of reading it the one or two times we did. I think the pep band could play it, but I don't think it would be a good choice for any of our normal venues. Maybe if this "Pep Band in Concert" thing catches on, it would be good there. The major problem with it is that it's boring. It's boring to play (c'mon, the mello "melody" consist of 6 notes, then a 4 measure hold, repeated), and quite frankly, it's boring to listen to. So yeah, who knows... James 09:21, May 9, 2007 (EDT)
:I can certainly see where it becomes boring. It's one of those tunes you have to do something with to prevent it from becoming monotonous. I've always wondered if we couldn't do something similar to Blast! where members of the band go out into the audience or something. But I think even that would do better with Pep Band in Concert. I like the concert idea as a once a year thing. Maybe TSBMH, maybe DCC 308. Honestly the week before I stepped down I was talking with Bob about reserving 308 for a night for that sort of thing. Could be fun ... *Digitizing the Library
:I have found a copier that will scan pages and email them as pdfs. This removes my need for someone else's scanner, and perhaps will make it possible for me to start digitizing the pep band library as a safety precaution against part loss. Anyone can use the copier, however to get to it, your ID card needs special access. If anyone else has a scanner and wants to scan music, I will not stop you. I am offering my talk page as a means of tracking which songs have been scanned, so that organization can be made easier. I figure that one of the younger band members can eventually start burning these to dvd (I only say younger because T40s don't have dvd burners -.-' I realize this project will take much longer than the time I have left at RPI, it's just that it'll never get done until it gets started.
::A question and a suggestion: where are you keeping the scanned versions right now, and can you scan handwritten parts first? Hail, Alma mater, and the Rensselaer Union march are three songs that come to mind. Also, you might want to make mention next to each song scanned if any of the parts need touched up in photoshop. Trick trickster 00:14, February 28, 2007 (EST)
:::As of now, the one song I have scanned is on my computer. We could centralize the data, I'm just not sure how readily available I should make copies of copyrighted media. If we don't care, I'll put them on my RPI webspace. I agree that handwritten parts get scanned first - I only scanned 112 because I had it, and to make sure the method worked. Finally, if we're going to go into photoshop, I'll have to talk to someone about borrowing a cd or 4...
*On arranging. Walking on the Sun and some sort of something from Pirates of the Carribbean were pieces I was considering. I'm interested to see what you've got and offer input if you'd like. TrekMuse 07:15, June 6, 2007 (EDT)
Songs that have been digitized
*041 - Hail, Dear Old Rensselaer - who knew there was 3rd trombone and 3rd clarinet (and also Eb clar.) parts?
**Similar to Malaguena, some parts didn't want to scan nicely. I'm going to fix this.
::UPDATE -18:17, April 13, 2007 (EDT): The following parts do not wish to be scanned, at least legibly, by the scanner I'm using. Someone else is welcome to try to get better scans of:
::*The ORIGINAL flute/picc part
::*The NEW flute part (hail only, alma mater scans fine)
::*ALL clarinet 1 parts (original hail, new hail (has no 1st/2nd distinction) and new alma mater)
::*The new clarinet 2 alma mater
::*3rd cornet
*112 - Malaguena
**For some reason, a handful of the parts did not want to scan like the rest of them - flute, tuba and snare drum. They're legible, just not totally clean - no worse than a song that's been copied and recopied a number of times. I'll try rescanning them soon.

:::That was what I understood from what he told me. The set basically stopped at either 431, 432, or 433. 431 was the last song Vicky ordered and it was in the set for that year. 432 I brought in during Vicky's year because people were asking for Christmas/Holiday music other than 55 and Frosty, but I don't recall it making it to the set or rehearsals until the following year. 433 we got from Colgate on the overnight road trip that year - but we only had copies of it for something like 2 months so it never made it much past the opening being used as a cheer. During a move in or out of the dorms, my two sets got mixed together and eventually just merged. I can probably backtrack, but it would be easier to just use a copy of the older set. Of those songs, I like these the best (just my $0.02):

*Johnny B. Goode
*Layla (if we can make it crisp)
*Rebel Yell
*Seven Nation Army (except for the ending, which is just weird)
Gary 21:38, March 25, 2007 (EDT)
The ones I like are:

*Dr. Feelgood
*Layla
*Rebel Yell
*Seven Nation Army
*Spirit in the Sky
*Superfly
*Johnny B. Goode

I'm also going to see what I can do about arranging "Limelight" or finding it. Drummer52987 21:49, March 25, 2007 (EDT)

Not that I'll get to play much of any of these songs, but sure, I'll throw in some thoughts. I liked these:

*Freebird - If they have the guitar part optional, and the solo written somewhere else, it's worth a shot. Otherwise, forget about it.
*Layla (I'm with Gary, only if it'll be clean)
*Rebel Yell
*Seven Nation Army - This sounded like a great song; then it ended. I listened to it three times before I was sure there wasn't something wrong with Realplayer. Not only does weird not begin to describe it, it's going to be damn near impossible to pull off. If the trumpets get ambitious next year, this'll be a great song otherwise.
*Spirit in the Sky
*Johnny B. Goode
*House of the Rising Sun - While I'm a fan, a lot of people are going to think this isn't very peppy, and they're probably right.

All in all, with a couple of these songs, we'll have an excuse to bring the gong to more hockey games ;) HLPXX 22:28, March 25, 2007 (EDT)

Out of the ones listed, the ones I like best are Dr. Feelgood, Superfly, Rebel Yell, and Seven Nation Army(except for the godawful ending). I also really like Johnny B. Goode, but we need to go to the library to make sure the one we have isn't the same arrangement (I think it's 150 something). Trick trickster 23:35, March 25, 2007 (EDT)
*It's 154 in the library. Gary 00:27, March 26, 2007 (EDT)

About the seven nation army ending: it does suck. But I think it can be easily fixed by having the trumpets play the normal chord and adding a good stinger. Drummer52987 00:08, March 26, 2007 (EDT)

Some more songs I was looking at:
*Brooklyn: http://www.jwpepper.com/ram/10027140.ram
**It's not really typical of our style, but I think it sounds cool.
*Actually, I guess it was only one song I was looking at. Trick trickster 23:05, April 23, 2007 (EDT)
:::I really like this one. While it's not in our usual style, I think that's a good thing. The trombone part follows the tubas for the most part, so it's ok if there aren't a lot of them. Mellos get the melody, and the trumpets are pushed to the background a lot. Not that I'd be getting much of a chance to play it, but it sounds nice. HLPXX 23:37, April 23, 2007 (EDT)
Out of what's listed, I like Me & Julio, House of the Rising Sun, Spirit in the Sky, and Johnny B. Goode. Ok, so maybe I'm old or something. If memory serves the Johnny B. Goode in the library isn't very good, but I would recommend reading through it at least once before buying it (maybe ask folks to stick around after a rehearsal for a few minutes, one to a part, to make sure you get a balanced sound to test it with).
Before I touch this any more, I want to make sure that everyone thinks it's a good idea. Also, if anyone can come up with a better description (shouldn't be too hard), go for it. Trick trickster 00:31, May 1, 2007 (EDT)
:So, would this be a recurring thing, where there will be Category:Active Songs (2006-2007), Category:Active Songs (2007-2008), and so on? If this is the eventual plan, I see certain songs (Carry On comes to mind) being in waaaay too many categories. Just my $0.02 HLPXX 00:37, May 1, 2007 (EDT)
::Well I was figuring we'd only make a new category for major overhauls of the active set. Unless there's a really easy way to categorize each song with a range of years so that the active set can be searched year by year without having all of the separate categories that this system would require. But I doubt there is anything that easy. Trick trickster 00:44, May 1, 2007 (EDT)
:::Maybe not so much categorizing each song, but you could make a page titled "Active set 2003-06" or something, with links to each song in that set. I imagine it's about the same amount of work, only this way, the link goes both ways. As long as it's only for major overhauls, it sounds like a good idea to me. We get to see the evolution of the active set. HLPXX 00:58, May 1, 2007 (EDT)
::::The active set overhaul in the summer of 2003 was the first time that sort of thing had been done since Mike Brown built the current library infrastructure (and the previous active set) in 1996. From that time forward, the only changes were adding the new songs for the year to the end of the set (usually done in August when new copies were made before the first rehearsal since tunes were usually ordered at the end of the prior year's budget). As I understand it, a similar re-structuring was done recently, creating a new active set. So, I guess lets start with the cross-referencing ability a Category would offer and if it seems cumbersome, we'll switch. Thankfully, with such a small dataset (3 active sets) it won't be too hard to change. TrekMuse 09:34, May 1, 2007 (EDT)

I decided to start this. It was obvious to me that no one disagreed with this category's creation. If I'm wrong, I stopped at 50 so cleanup wouldn't be that hard. HLPXX 22:45, May 6, 2007 (EDT)
:Looking good so far. Out of curiosity, when I built the set I had photocopies of the scores made and blown up onto legal size or B size paper. I don't know if they're being used (in fact, I doubt it) but they'd be very useful for writing up info on all these and for future arranging. Any chance someone could take a look in the pep band closet in the library and see if they're still there? I'll gladly pay for shipping and/or pick them up on the weekend of the 18th. TrekMuse 09:29, May 8, 2007 (EDT)
::The scores you're talking about are indeed in the pep band closet (at least they were as of 5 months ago, I haven't been in there lately). That brings up a question I have: do you know where the parts to 434 - Summon the Heroes are? The score is with the others, but we have no idea where the parts for it are. Trick trickster 14:17, May 8, 2007 (EDT)
:::I noticed that on the songs page. It's possible they ended up misplaced in with my things, or simply somewhere else in the library. The next couple boxes of things from home may have them and I'm planning on going through them soon, so I'll keep an eye out. Hopefully they'll be there. I mean, I'll type the parts off the score, but I'd rather not have to. I'll keep you up to date. Let me know if you'll be around on the 19th or so and I'll hopefully have parts to deliver and pick up the scores. TrekMuse 14:38, May 8, 2007 (EDT)
::::Work has been busy and I haven't completely unpacked said boxes yet, but a quick look didn't turn up anything. Another possibility is that Vicky has it because of the final month of the year, but either way, if there's still nothing by the time I empty those boxes and no new leads, I'll start re-typing the parts. I didn't add 436, 437, 439, 440, 441, and 442 (all of which were introduced between 2003 and 2006) since I wasn't sure whether the category is meant to be any songs which were in the set at some point between the two years or whether it's only songs which were active for the full length of time.
* The Anthems, because, as Bill said "It's really the only time we're all in tune and following closely. It's all downhill from there."
I'd list a couple more, but that'd just be silly.

Least favorite songs
* 414 - Duel of the Fates AKA: Duel of the monotonous 16th notes
* 420 - Soul Bossa Nova It's catchy, but I don't like Austin Powers at all
* 020 - Live and Let Die Not a fan of the song or this arrangement

Songs I'd like to read
* "Just think of it in 1/4 time. Then the time signature never changes." It's a bear to conduct (I'd know, I tried), but I really like the original tune
* 114 - Jump Another tough but good one
* 208 - Land of Make Believe Great tune. We tried it once, but it didn't catch on with too many people.
* 237 - Overture from "Tommy" Another great tune stuck as being a one-hit wonder. And both are great arrangements.
* 255 - We Built this City and 301 - Theme from Star Trek IV Accurate arrangements, but they may need reworks to be a little easier to play without a complete complement of instruments playing strongly

*Fill out wiki pages for songs I have info for (a little at a time) ... heck, potentially just do a brain dump
*Finish the Lord of the Rings cheer-set and deliver it to the band.
*Arrange half the songs and cheers I've thought of arranging for the band
*Arrange the other half of the songs and cheers I've thought of arranging for the band
If you'd like to assist on any of them, I'd certainly welcome the help! Also it may cut down on redundant work and save us both time.
It absolutely did, however I have absolutely no idea what else it had, so I didn't write anything. HLPXX 23:11, February 14, 2007 (EST)
Formatting Question: Do we want "Composed by" as seen here, or "Original composer:" as seen in 0.2? I'll do the footwork to make them uniform, but I wanted to get other people's opinions. I'm kinda split. TrekMuse 12:28, May 8, 2007 (EDT)
The info we've been including so far has been labeled "written by", "arranged by", and "originally recorded by". As of right now there's no set layout for this info. Trick trickster 14:21, May 8, 2007 (EDT)
