070 - Hawaii Five-O
About the song
Originally recorded by The Ventures, and arranged by Mort Stevens.
Instrumentation requirements
Needs a large brass section, and the song starts with a drum solo.
Roadmap
The song starts with a three measure drum solo, leading into a pickup for the melody in measure four.
History
Theme song to the 1968 TV show of the same name.
Typically this song is only played if RPI is ever up five goals/touchdowns/etc. to zero over their opponent. When that happens, this is played instead of Hail. Occasionally, Hawaii Five-O is played if RPI scored 5 unanswerd goals/touchdowns/etc., but this is generally recommended against, as the arrangement is rather difficult, and we never really sound all that good playing it.
Psyche
For a number of years, some fan(s) (from one of the frat sections) would yell across the arena to the band "PLAY HAWAII FIVE-O!" The band would respond by playing the first two measures of the song (the drum solo), and instead of coming in on the third measure, would yell "PSYCHE!" This tradition seems to have died, however, as the fan(s) that were requesting it either graduated or just stopped.
