History of WRPI
WRPI was formed as an experimental carrier-current AM station around 1947, affiliated with the callsign W2SZ, but soon gained the WRPI moniker locally, and was assigned it by the FCC broadcasting at 640 kHz around 1951. It subsequently obtained an FM license in 1957 and began broadcasting on its current frequency on November 1, 1957.
RPI's original AM radio station, WHAZ, operated between 1922 and 1967, after which WRPI was the only remaining radio station on the campus.
